Sony used PS4 with Used Game support. It's not very effective.
Nintendo used Smash Bros with Megaman. It's super effective.
Microsoft is paralyzed. It may not be able to move.

Microsoft used paralyze heal! MS uses, buy both companies with much less than a years worth of net income.
MS wins and gets bored because it's now competing with Apple and/or Google in the gaming industry.

Bwahahahaha! I would LOVE to see Balmer try that.
With Sony's current financial position (up a shit creek without a paddle) MS shareholder would revolt. And as for Nintendo? Throw ALL the money in the world, you're still not going to get anywhere, not while Yamauchi is still around to stamp his feet.
And lets not even get into the overall difficulties a foreign entity will encounter when attemptiing a hostile takeover of a Japanese company. Local small investors are almost universally inclined to rally behind the home team, even if there is no financial sense to do so.
Google up the number of successful hostile takeover of major Japanese company by a foreign entity. (Hint: it's rarer than a Mew)
Some problem can be solved by throwing money at it, some not.
And as for the OP statement? Sony won this gen? No no no no no, even if the PS3 were to outsell the Wii at this point, the winner of this gen is the Wii commercially and the 360 when core gaming is concern. Given the position Sony was in at the start of the gen, the subsequent staggering financial lost, market share contraction and reputational lost especially to American gamers, Sony can be nothing but the biggest loser this gen. I say this as a fan of the PS3 and an early adopter who has been with them this entire gen.
The winner this gen is everyone BUT Sony.
