Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft on why Xbox One games will be “locked to you”

All this nonsense is just because the game can not be played from the disk.

Why not share the details now if the Xbox One was designed with the secondary market in mind from the beginning?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I doubt the xbox team were at a board meeting talking about all the features they wanted and someone said "let's make sure the used game market doesn't get effected"

"you could have multiple consoles and your content is on every one of them"

lol. Well, we do know that MS fans buy half a dozen consoles each.

Though...question...needs to be answered:
If I own multiple consoles, can I play MY games on both of MY consoles at the same time??

so how are game rentals supposed to work?

Doesn't really bother me, as I don't lend out my games to people. When I buy a game, it's mine, I have no intention of getting rid of it (at least not for a LONG time) and if other people want to use my copy of the game, I'll be present. If it's singleplayer, I'll just sign myself in alongside their profile, and then I can leave the room if I want to do something else while they play.

EDIT: to answer the question above me without double-posting...yes, your new X1 will still play your game, because your game is locked to your Xbox Live account, NOT to the hardware.

hm.. maybe single player/offline, but certainly not online

Title is a lie.

None of that tells me "why" ALL content is somehow better attached to my ID in DRM locking sort of way.

Yes, I can see value in all content essentially being a digital copy. I personally want it to all move that way, however, even iOS and especially Android allow me to very easily access my content on a very large number of devices.

Additionally, the concept of buying a disc that is essentially worthless after activating the content on my device seems pointless and anti-consumer. If I buy the physical media, that should be all I ever need... including if I gift it or lend it out. But this partly goes back to the larger argument against the way software is sold to consumers under licenses vs ownership.

I honestly hope MS fails at this. As its underlying policies are a gateway to never owning anything again.. only renting it as long as they servers remain active and in EAs case that will mean 12mos.
