Forums - Nintendo - Is Basic Wii U going to be discontinued?

They should reduce both models, then release a new model with more onboard flash memory and charge more for it. A lot of so-called "hardcore gamers" seem to be completely unable to understand that the amount of space can be expanded upon with an external hard drive.

A new expensive model called the "Wii U - model for oblivious hardcore gamers" can be made.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Could be as no one (the minority) is buying them anyway and they lose their value much quicker in Europe than the Deluxe SKU.

it's a good move. They need to make the basic more appetising for consumers.

Well's that why I'm saying that the basic version shouldn't be selling less. It should be selling more. I don't really see anything much of value that the Premium gives you over basic, especially when you could be buying a sizeable hard drive that you'll need anyway even if you bought the Premium version.

Unless of course people would much rather give up the all important hard drive space for Nintendoland. Or if they want black colour instead of white, which is only aesthetic.

Most people probably don't need an HDD, so saying that it is mandatory is disingenious.

The Premium set also gives a discount/payback of 8-10% (depending on where you live) on all digital purchases until the end of 2014.

If you get the Basic SKU, I think it's almost mandatory.

Even without connecting the WiiU to the internet (20% worldwide don't have their WiiU connected), there's still only 3GB left for savegames, which might work, but you couldn't even install DLCs from GOTY editions.

Rol's point is that the premium's internal memory is big enough for most people (except for those who want to go digital).

They buy the premium so they don't have to buy the external HDD they'd need if they bought the basic, and they get a game and some other extra stuff for the same money.

good 8GB is pointless and not enough for downloading games

I hope not, I'm planning to buy one once the price drops to 149 €. It's already at 179,99 € so it shouldn't take too long to get there.

Where is it lower than 200 EUR? If it's true that they are calling them back, I'd buy two for holiday gifts.

Pretty much everywhere, you just need to keep an eye out for it.
The UK had 2 or 3 big sales recently where the Basic was 175€.

184€ with free delivery is at the moment the cheapest in Germany (doesn't deliver to the Netherlands though):

There is always the option of hooking up a 1-2 TB external hard drive.  At least Nintendo made expanding your space easy and cheap unlike some companies.

now with a $100 price cut for the "premium" wiiu i might jump onboard and get one.
