Life beyond earth has to be somewhere. We just dont have the tech to ever interact

OT: Depends. I think that someone who considers the evidence of extraterrestrial life and says that based on that evidence he has no reason to believe it exists, is perfectly rational. He might say that, mathematically speaking, there is a chance of it existing, but that he will not make the assumption of existence based on a mathematical chance. However, if someone dismisses the possibility entirely, then yes, I would consider them close minded.

This may support M theory... but it is too early to call it proof.  The LHC did kick a lot (but not all) string theory to the curb when it found the higgs at 125 GeV and with the supersymetry results.

Depends are we talking any form of life or 'intelligent' space-faring races?

In truth, just due to the sheer magnitude of the universe, no matter remotely small the odds of life, even intelligent life, it is absolutely guaranteed to exist, somewhere, somewhen else in the universe.

If someone rejects life of any form existing in the universe - then they are burying their heads in the sand and ignoring simple facts and math. It MUST exist. It's impossible not too. And really, that doesn't conflict with anyone's belief system either so it doesn't matter if they are Muslim, Christian or followers of Zeus (which do still exist, believe it or not) this shouldn't challenge their faith or sensibilities so if they reject it they are very closed-minded.

If they reject the Star Wars/Star Trek concept of alien life, that's fine. It is indeed out there somewhere but Space is so large we might never, ever come across it in humankind's existence and that alone is enough cause for them to disbelieve. For example the next 'intelligent' life might be in the Andromeda galaxy - an inconceivable distance away - and likely our species will never even know of each other.

CHNOPS (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphoros) based life is the most probable type, not only due to its abundance in the universe, but also the chemical compounds it makes.  Other mixes not based on this carbon based organic chemistry are far less likely to exist.

I have advanced degrees in Biology and Earth Sciences... and I have no reason to doubt the existence of complex life elsewhere in the universe.

I am however quite certain that there is a distinct shortage of hot green women with compatible genitailia.  I also have little reason to believe they visit here often(ever) and anally probe random people.


Most probably from based on what we know. But I like to think that we don't know anything.

I think it would be arrogant of anyone to be so self-indulgent enough to believe that earth is the only place in the entire universe that can sustain life. 

Life can be anything from just a small piece of bacteria. For someone to say not even something as small as that could possibly exist outside of the confides of earth, when they know how small we actually are in the grand scheme of things is baffling.  

I think when you mention aliens to the average joe they get these images in their heads

With these images in mind you can understand why someone wouldnt believe in aliens.

In fact in terms of probability there MUST BE extra-terrestrial life. This is simple science and logic.

As for people who are "skeptical", they are just plain stupid, the kind of people who believe they are smart because they believe the media but not what's outside of it. Well let me tell you that the NASA itself believes in extra-terrestrial forms and incorporates this fact in all their space observation/exploration projects.
