hmm I never thought about it like that before.

Yes, I do. The universe is huge, billions of stars, habitable zones...etc. It's not unlikely that there is life somewhere besides Earth.

I know people who don't like this idea because it means we're not special like they thought. I think that's pretty closed-minded.

You are missing options. I certainly don't "believe" in extra-terrestrial life, but that doesn't mean I dismiss the possibility either. I have seen no evidence to give me any reason to believe it exists, however the universe is vast beyond comprehension and it would not surprise me if it did exist, in fact I would probably be more surprised if there was nothing else out there.

OT: Depends. I think that someone who considers the evidence of extraterrestrial life and says that based on that evidence he has no reason to believe it exists, is perfectly rational. He might say that, mathematically speaking, there is a chance of it existing, but that he will not make the assumption of existence based on a mathematical chance. However, if someone dismisses the possibility entirely, then yes, I would consider them close minded.

That is by no means "proof" of other universes, it is merely statistical evidence that matches there theory, not even the astronomers concerned claim it as proof.

There's one religion that states "Every fixed star has planets and every planet has its creatures, which no one can count." So life is not merely likely in the universe, but common.

That statement was made back when science thought that planet formation was a total fluke and that only a tiny fraction of a percent of stars might have planets. Now we know planets are as common as mud.

So actually religion talked about alien life well before science took the subject seriously.
