Forums - Nintendo - Why do You think the Smash Brothers series continues to grow?

The growth between the N64 version and the GC version occured simply because the GC version was superior on all fronts:

- Much more characters and stages
- Faster gameplay
- Adventure, Event, All-Star and Tournament mode (among many others) were introduced
- Trophies were introduced
- Ganondorf was playable

Super Smash Bros. Brawl messed things up a little with the awful Smash Ball and somewhat slower gameplay. But they made up for some of it with the level editor, replay saves and Subspace Emissary. In the end I'd say that the sales would have ended up slightly below Melee levels if it wasn't for the Wii's relatively massive hardware numbers.

As long as the series keep evolving while maintaining its core (which was shaken by the aforementioned Smash Ball), its popularity should keep growing.

You know you can turn the smash ball off right?

Or just spend about 2 minutes learning how to play the game, ensuring that you get the smash ball 90% of the time, and in the 10% you can dodge or mitigate the enemy's final smash 90% of the time. Sure, 1% of the time the smash ball will mess you up, but mostly, it appearing just hands victory to the better player.

I love the addition of the smash ball!

Fan following. That's basically it. I mean when a game of this caliber gets so much hype and press more and more people want it. Also, the game has longevity. I just played it yesterday with my cousins.

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .

I love the addition of supers but hate the smash ball.

Faster characters always get it. Wish there was a better way of obtaining a super.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

The reason SSBM improved in the sales department over the original SSB was because the series was new and many people, for obvious reasons, didn't know if they would like the series, wanted to buy the series, etc. So, when SSBM came out people knew they liked it, and they bought it.

The reason for the increase from SSBM to SSBB is that of the Wii's humongous install base. Also due to the fact of newly-implemented Online modes that have attracted a larger (even more serious) crowd, the ones who do it for competition.

I doubt there will be an increase on the Wii U. There will either be a drop to somewhere as low as SSBM, or in between SSBM and the original SSB. (If we combine both the 3DS and Wii U versions it should get upwards of SSBB.)

It grew with Nintendo's install base.  Melee ------> Brawl

Brawl may have had some appeal with all that content as well.

However, Melee is the superior game.

(SSB64 ---------> Melee) was because of game quality.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Addenum: SSBB grew because even those who now bash SSBB at every single opportunity bought the game. Seriously, we get it. You prefer Melee. Good for you, no one cares >:{

Because it's one of the best fighting games ever! But yeah SSB4 won't sell much if WiiU keeps selling like the 360 in Japan.

Then you have obviously have never seen how easy it is for a ganondorf player to get a smash ball.

each one has surpassed the previous in the series. Not only that, nintendo is now releaseing it on their future handheld now because of its great popularity. Even on the gc it managed to grow an audience. Why is it that this series continues to grow?

Because it's good ?
