Juggling.......
Not sure this post will be true with ssb4. I really think the first game was a hit simply for the novelty of all these 1st party characters coming together. (i'll save the psabr argument for when it actually comes up). the sales jump to melee took a good game with a great idea and made it 10x better. I think Melee is actually what made people buy brawl. I think people thought they'd get melee but better and they had talked up the game to their friends for the 5ish years in between. I think that enough people were disappointed with brawl that console numbers will be lower this time a round. That being said, brawl is my favorite. I don't think i can say it's the best because of tripping and air tripping, but i think its even with melee.

Hey, look on the bright side: It will also release on the 3DS. With ~ 7Mil units LT on the WiiU at the very least (why should it sell worse than Melee?) + anywhere above 10Mil units on the 3DS the franchise will still grow

Over the entire lifetime? A bit optimistic, but definitely possible.
Presentation. Sakurai knows his audience well. He knows what they want and he knows what they think they want and he knows the differences between those two things.

Because Melee was awesome. The next one may do well or not I think many old fans will be on the fence.
After getting and playing Brawl as my first experience of the franchise I don't think much of it. I'll be giving it a miss when it's available for the Wii U. I guess it doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of a fair amount of Nintendo's various franchises. I'm a big fan of Zelda and Metroid but that's about it.

Couldnt be farther from the truth.
1. Sakurai has said in 3-4 interviews that he does not like competition.
2. He openly listens to the casual players and ignore competitive players. They said "melee is too fast" and he took care of that in brawl. The game is MUCH slower than melee.
3. I dont know how familiar you are with competitive brawl but Metaknight has been deemed the best character for 5 years now 9the full life span of brawl) and his tournament results/money earned proves it........who created/owned the character "metaknight?" SAKURAI.
4. In an interview about a year ago, Sakurai admitted he "balanced" every single one of the characters.
The point of me bringing this up is to help you/me/everyone that Sakurai does what HE (and anybody who supports his stance on competition) wants. It might be different this time around with ssb4 because Namco is helping develope the game AND sakurai has something seriously wrong with his wrist so he isnt allowed to do as much work as he once could.
