Does the XBone have DVR functions?

What did people expect? IPTV? Of course you need a cable-receiver. But I don't care for tv anyway.

The way this article makes it sound though is that it's an MS add on that you need.

This was confirmed a while ago as I'm aware, and I'm pretty sure I've seen it posted here before as well.

I'll look forward to whenever they can launch it globally

I just looked. No DVR, Still needs a cable box. Well, it's not "All in one" more like "Some in one"

i would like to know more details on “Live TV will require a supported receiver device with HDMI output,”.

does that mean daisy chaining any old cablebox with HDMI output? is it an xbone specific peripheral? i think it is weird that it is NA only at launch cause i was under the impression all you had to do was plug the HDMI cable currently in my tv into the xbox and that was that.

honestly, if people have to drop an extra $50 for a peripheral or if only specific MS approved tv providers are supported i can't see this being big.

It's probably because the xbox middleware (integrated in the xbox, no peripheral needed) interfaces with the cable boxing using custom logic that is dependent on the provider.

So, with that in mind, it would have to be tailored per geogrphical region, and within that per supplier.

when sony makes a TV is there region/supplier specific logic?  at a first pass all xbone is doing is displaying live tv so why is that NA only.  i guess i could see the one guide taking a bit longer to support everywhere but there are so many companies already doing it that you'd think the feature MS spent half of their reveal talking about is a feature MS would have figured out how to support globally at launch.  otherwise wtf is MS's message for the rest of the world?  ..please be excited for this device that does all this great stuff you can't do?

The stuff they are demoing takes work and takes partnership with cable companies. It's the kind of things that takes time, effort, agreements, etc.

This shouldn't be a surprise to you. To tell your cablebox to do something via xbox commands requires work and integration with proprietary interfaces, and they likely don't want to deploy this until it works for all providers, so it makes sense.

Example: "Xbox, turn on ESPN". That's not as simple as having a TV input a channel to a cable-box. It requires mapping a station name to a channel. These dictionaries need to be created, and the smart guide could require even more complex logic.

They may also be working on pricing strategies with cable companies and may not be ready to deploy until the companies agree to partner with them. Legal and marketting stuff here too.

you need a receiver + an xbox one peripheral for it to work

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
