Xbox One: live TV available in US only at launch, requires separate device

Xbox One’s live TV fucntionality will only be available in the US at launch, a press release from Microsoft has confirmed.

In a release sent to VG247 this evening confirms that Live TV with Kinect navigation, Live TV with One Guide, Trending, and NFL on Xbox will only be available in North America at launch. The release added that Microsoft anticipates a global roll-out over time.

As shown in the Microsoft reveal stream, and confirmed in the release, “Live TV will require a supported receiver device with HDMI output,” which is sold separately.

What do you make of the above then?

You need a cable box plus the receiver for t to work

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I believe it's what most of us were expecting, especially since the pics of the xbox One had HDMI IN and HDMI OUT ports. I do believe this will roll out globally relatively soon because it's an important part of their strategy, and that MS will likely also partner with a cable company to offer a premium service or to sell the xbox on a subscription model.

Hahaha X1 is such a joke.

I don't even see the point, to be honest. Most people have devices that do this stuff already. I want less layers, not more.

So, lets add this up. XBL subscription, cable subscription, X1 add on... anything else?

i would like to know more details on “Live TV will require a supported receiver device with HDMI output,”.

does that mean daisy chaining any old cablebox with HDMI output? is it an xbone specific peripheral? i think it is weird that it is NA only at launch cause i was under the impression all you had to do was plug the HDMI cable currently in my tv into the xbox and that was that.

honestly, if people have to drop an extra $50 for a peripheral or if only specific MS approved tv providers are supported i can't see this being big.

No Sky support in the UK?

Ill stick to my 360 thanks MS

It's probably because the xbox middleware (integrated in the xbox, no peripheral needed) interfaces with the cable boxing using custom logic that is dependent on the provider.

So, with that in mind, it would have to be tailored per geographical region, and within that per supplier.

That was already expected though, I didn't think they'd have all that in other countries on day 1. People can't tell me that they are surprised about this lol.

It says it needs to be supported so I doubt any cable box with hdmi out and it also says it will be sold seperatly which sounds like an add on
