if digital is the future and everyone is going to buy digitally they why should MS or sony force the issue?  why not making playing a game from a disc possible so that taking that disc and (via an internet connection) downloading it to a user account is a feature?

someone a few months back layed out this great plan where you can basically transfer your license between a disc and an account giving you all the awesome of digital AND all the awesome of physical.

don't get me wrong, i'm going to be a digital guy for sure.  but seriously, there are people that simply can't afford to pay the bill for a monthly internet connection in their home.

digital might be the future but you can't be blind to the realities of today.

Keep in mind that the disc you get with your retail purchas on Xbox One is just a distribution device. All you have to do is install it and that game is forever tied to your Xbox live ID. You can pretty much throw the disc in the garabge as you will be able to download this game for a long time to come. If Microsoft gives gamers the ability to trade or re-sell their used games like they are saying they will, they really are going a step beyond anything anyone else has ever implemented for digitally distributed software. You could even say they re being generous, if they offer this feature...

In terms of users without intenet, I expect Microsoft to announce that you are able to play and install the game without an internet connection if you keep the disc in the console. they are not stupid and its the only option that makes sense...

Except that doesn't prevent used game sales at all.

Sure it does. Have you never activated Windows over the phone? Keeping a game in the console + phone activation for the install would be needed to make this happen. That is if they intend the gamers to allow to transfer user licenses to other consoles like they are saying that they will elaborate on at E3. If that doesn't happen, only phone activation would be needed...

And then the Ms sends an "all clear" to your One by magic? Maybe they chant some words over the line while you put your phone up to it.

Even better, I bet there is a dock. It only works with windows phone though. But that's not a big deal, right? Good business :D

Its pretty clear that you know even less than it seems...

That may be, but at least I know that a ps4 can share games with friends and a XOne can't.

Oh... I thought this thread said the death of CONSOLE games and why we shouldn't be scared.

Because that I agree with.

but you can't borrow a game from a friend

(Whereas on ps4 supposedly, you can even stream a game to a friend and play together, like how handhelds do)

Damn good argument...

Yay!!!

Can you clarify how the over the phone activation works. I'm curious as to how they let the device know you activated it if it doesn't have an internet connection?

I'd have no problem with this IF in fact Sony and M$ along with 3rd parties follow Steams's lead and aggressively price games, rather than every single "retail release" (AAA or not) have a fixed MSRP at $60. They are essentially cutting out the middle man here, so there's no reason to charge $60 for 95% of games.

Also... I've had no problem with paying for XBL in the past because it's been a great service, but if going forward you have to not only pay all of these premiums like a "used game" fee or other such fees, but also pay a monthly rate just to get the basics that XBL offers, then M$ has seriously overestimated what the average consumer is willing to spend on a device that primarily plays games.

Don't forget disolitude.. while you rightly praise the possibility that this will open up the path to aggressive pricing by developers and publishers on consoles, on the other hand the entry fee to console gaming has also steeply increased for the average consumer just by the simple fact that without an internet connection, and a damn good one at that, the console will be all but useless. You won't even be able to play the boxed games you purchased at retail without an online connection to verify the installation and link it to your profile. So this could all add up pretty quickly for the average consumer before they've even gotten a change to pop in their first game.

I expect a lot of clarity to come for this at e3. they have to implement a method which allows for game installs without internet connection. I suspect it will most likely involve keeping the game in the bluray drive while gaming much like you do with current gen and somesort of a phone authentication lol

LoL @ "phone authentication".  Sweet, I can't wait to order some PPV movies and events through my Xbox 1!

You may laugh and I would too had I not had to do a phone activation for Windows 7 and 8 twice in the last 6 months. Hard drive swap and motherboard failure made it so had to call in and read a massive code to match to the code of my license...etc. Anywho its a lot more sohisticated than you may think.

I've had to do that twice when wiping out my old Dell and reinstalling Windows XP a few years back, so I know how much of a pain in the ass it is.  I just got a chuckle at the idea of having to plug a land-line into the new Xbox to authenticate games or other content if you don't have access to an internet connection lol.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Why they comparing this to steam?

Steam is here to stay, XBOX ONE will last *caught* ONE generation. After that it is a ticking time bomb till the online services go down. What if I want to play some of these magical games to come, 20 years from now. I doubt I will be able to do that.

Now look at every console that has come prior current gen. Everything is plug and play. I can still play all those old classics. No wonder retro gaming is gaining popularity cause even though the graphics are not up to today's standard, people know they get great game play with replay value for years to come.

can someone explain the always online and used game situation. i fell sick and missed the announcement. i can't get clear information from any sites

Well I do not support Steam unless I have to for certain games. So I guess that will be the same for Xbox1. I will buy the games I want for full price and used games elsewhere (PC, PS3, 360, PS4, Wii U, everything else?)

Can you clarify how the over the phone activation works. I'm curious as to how they let the device know you activated it if it doesn't have an internet connection?

It works on the same principle as a cd key that comes with the piece of software would work. For windws 7 you get a pop up with like 8 groups of characters which you read out to an automated machine over the phone. Once it confirms the code tied to your piece of windows 7 and confirms that you have a valid license that isnt activated anywhere else it reads out a massive code back to you which you enter on your PC.

Something like this can easily work for game activation even if its a little unnecessary... im sure microsoft has a better solution in mind since this phone activation is over a decade old. All they need is you to send them the cd key for game that you bought and your console ID and then theyd give you the activation code that works for that console and game only.
