Forums - Microsoft - The Death Of Used Games - Why You Should Not Be Surprised (Or Scared) At What's Coming

I..I..I'm sorry

But...That!, Was the most biggest pile of steaming rotting horse shit I have ever read. Let me explain as to why "I" am scared to death about this....(kind of a long read)

As a gamer for over 20 years, I have hardly seen any change until now (asides from the arrival of online gaming). Gaming was just simply playing a console. You plug it in, turn it on, and pop in a game and play. That was it.

Now it seems that you plug it in, turn it on, launch a game and play.....But wait-first the console tells you have to come to it's terms of agreement. This agreement tells you no longer own the game (physical or digital) and that your given the "right" to play the game so as long its tied to their servers and not the console/machine itself? Bull shit!

Judging from this article, this writer seems to like the idea of companies controlling, and restricting the consumer even more in the disguise of great deals and sales; forcing them to pay more money than they have to while only giving them the "right" to play and not also owning it. This is why I don't like Steam (or that dreaded game tap). They're doing this just to cover their own failures and screw ups. Just because their over priced/budget AAA game didn't sell well, we're forced to pay more for a failed product? No thanks.

Not only that but the day that we witness the death of used games (physical copies of course), is the day we see the impending death of retro gaming. No longer will people be able to hunt for those sought after games they want for their collection. Physical copies of games will be even more valuable. They will be like a prized fossil where only small quantities would be in exsitence.

Now I'm all for change, but if this is the change that the industry wants to adapt where you can't even own the game anymore; all for the sake of a saving some $ (for both sides), I'm quitting gaming and sticking to the extinct retro-gaming.

*stands like Leonidas from 300* Let the flaming/criticizing commence.

I dont want to insult anyone but your post above is like listening to someone blast digital distribution and its DRM when its absolutely obvious they have no first hand experience in dealing with it. Your points along with 90% of posts around here indicate fear of change and downright lazyness to change more than any valid arguments. Its like iPhone, iPad, iTunes, other app stores, ecosystems, music subscription services, movie subscription services, PC gaming...etc... all dont exist and this is the first time you hear of this digital DRM sacrilege.

Also funny how youre trying to make it sound like im in the minority for not willing to die for physical media... Observe sales trends in mobile and music and movie sales as well as PC game sales and wake up to reality that will soon be embraced by consoles as well.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here....but what I get out of your posts, is that you seem to have zero problem coming off like an elitist PC gamer with a snotty attitude towards everyone else who doesn't agree with your views, because obviously you're "right" and everyone else is "wrong". Is that about it? Because that's certainly how it comes off.

And quite frankly, yes, you are in the minority, when it comes to CONSOLE GAMERS. Music, mobile phones, Steam downloads....NONE of that has a damn thing to do with CONSOLE GAMING. And most CONSOLE gamers, yes even younger ones, seem to prefer having a physical disc.

And even if that WEREN'T the case, I'm sorry to break it to you, but there is such a thing as a "difference of opinion". Just because someone doesn't share your views doesn't make them an idiot, or mean that their personal preferences or tastes are "wrong". It is all 100% entirely subjective. BUT, when it comes to something like people prefering games to be on a physical disc/cart/whatever, honestly......what the hell does tha have to do with YOU? If you don't prefer that, if YOU prefer to download and "own" your games digitially, good for you. Round of applause. That doesn't mean people like myself who prefer the opposite, are somehow just stubborn, bitter old assholes who can't "let go of the past". It's not a matter of past vs. future. It's a matter of preference and principle. In MY preference, and according to MY principles (and apparently many others'), having your game in a physical form is the way to go. Has been for decades. You can look at it as one part "I feel like I actually OWN this copy of the game", and one part the values of an actual Game Collector, which I am.

You can't really have or show off a TRUE game collection when all you "own" is a bunch of files stored on a cloud service somewhere. And for long-time Game Collectors like myself, who actually put value and pride in having and maintaining a healthy collection of actual game devices and mediums, yes, it's just a lot better. If you disagree with that, sorry. But that's no reason whatsoever to come off with a bad attitude to others who don't share your views.

End of story.

P.S. For the record, not that I actually need to tell you this, but yes, I DO in fact have experience and an "understanding" of digital downloads and DRM. I have a Steam account. I've been downloading games on PC/Wii/PS3/Wii U for quite some time.

I do not want the right to play the game. I want to "Own" it! It is mine, and I will do with it what I damn well please.

Lol but you do own it. However it's not tied to the disc. Disc is just the distribution method...

No. You "own" it so long as you can log into your account somewhere, so long as the server doesn't go down, etc. etc.

If I OWN a phyisical disc, I can pop that motherfucker in and play my game any time I want, RIGHT when I want to, and can take it and play it on anyone else's console, RIGHT when I want to. No obsctruction, no bullshit. It's MY copy for life. Not floating out there somewhere in the digital ether.

And I'm sorry, but trying to play it up as if people like myself who value physcial copies of a game, are somehow "behind the times" or "quaint old schoolers who just aren't with it", is not only insulting, it's also a very immature outlook on the situation. If you personally don't care about physical medium, that doesn't mean that others can't or don't have every right to.

The difference is choice. I still choose to buy music on CDs and Movies on Blu-ray because I know they're mine and I can do whatever the fuck I want with them.

Post E3 update: Soooooooo how's things looking for DRM now? I haven't heard cheering like that since twighlight princess
