Forums - Nintendo - Pachter on Nintendo's E3 Plans: "Not sure how this is different."

So essentially all Nintendo did was:
-Scaled down the main conference slightly in terms of the demos of games presented and added in a some more numbers/figures/graphs for the shareholders/analysts.
-Kept their booths for hands on experience for media pretty much the same.
-Added in a lot of Nintendo directs to show the games off directly themselves besides the media coverage.

The only major change is the addition of NDs, which is great but they communicated the message horribly. Instead of focusing on "We won't have a main conference" they should have just let everyone see their main conference along with all the NDs. They should have said that the main conference this year will be more tailored towards shareholders/analysts and the real info for gamers will be delivered through NDs. That way people could choose to either watch or ignore their main conference if they wished. It's not like the info there is under any kind of NDA, so people will find out anyway if they said anything interesting.

His point is if I might be so bold. That Nintendo isn't substituting a few smaller events for the larger event that they have cancelled. Which isn't the case at all no matter how many people insinuate otherwise. These smaller events have always been part of their presence at the show. In other words they aren't new, and further more he is saying that Nintendo hasn't even reformatted them to make up for the loss of their main event.

I don't think anyone who knows what they are talking about. Assumed that Nintendo wouldn't be having their standard business meetings, or that they wouldn't still be having their private booth sessions with gaming journalists. It should be noted however that every small company that will be attending will have those. Real powers in the industry do have large press events. Even the bigger third party publishers have such public events.

So for Nintendo to not be having an event. Sends a very strong message with many negative connotations. Specifically that they are no longer a real power in the industry. It means they will be negotiating from a position of weakness, and stating that they wouldn't be having the event has had a ripple effect forward into time. It creates just one more negative stigma for them, and for their product. It gives license to people to say that they are scared, don't have anything to show, don't know what they are doing, or are just indifferent about their product.

None of which is good for potential customers to hear, or even for their supporters for that matter. Lets call it what it really is a pride obliterating bitch slap. You can't honestly tell me that their not having a press conference hasn't left you with some real doubts about their future.

It gives people like YOU a "license" to say they are scared or don't have anything to show, but let's be honest, you would have been saying that anyway.

Bolded are all of the statements that show how dramatically you are blowing things out of proportion.

Nintendo is certainly taking a risk. It's a risk that may pay off, or it may not pay off. In that regard, I have doubts about their strategy, but being that I'm not a professional businessman like the people running that company, I try not to spend too much time second-guessing their decisions.

I do not have "real doubts" about Nintendo's future. Not at all. Not a single one. They have the best-selling console on the market. They have the two best-selling intellectual properties in the history of the industry. They are profitable. They're doing fine and they're going to continue to do fine, and the fact that they aren't following the same traditions as Sony and Microsoft this year won't change that. Insisting otherwise would be no more than a superstition.

Because they are having the same shows, but with a slightly different name. They will still show of games and whatnot and likely it will be blogged / streamed. The only real difference is they've added more NDs. That is what they should have said.

"This year we'll be adding significant more exposure to our fans with multiple Nintendo Directs before and during E3."

That's it. Simple, positive, and so forth. Instead they complicated it with language that made everyone think they'd be doing nothing and so forth. No need to dicsuss the main show at all, just not advertise it.

They're not the same shows at all, though. Especially not the Business Presentation one.

Are they having a large presentation in the same Kodak theater, with the same media, on same date/time?

yes.

They made it confusing when they didn't have to. All they needed to do was focus advertising on NDs and not the presentation. It would have been far less confusing and not given many people the idea that they are missing E3 entirely.

It doesn't matter that the "big show" is more of a quick promo with lots of on-hands time for the press vs a hour long promo event.

It's not the same media, the media isn't invited to this "big" conference. This is just the business partner meeting. Usually the press avoided this meeting in the past since this is just a glorified stock holder meeting tailored to business analysts and partners (logistics/retail, etc) There will be some information to be gleamed from this meeting, but far and wide this meeting the part of the "big press conference" that most gamers wanted to get rid of. Them talking about numbers, market share, what they are going from a busiess standpoint to grow the business, stategic partnership with non-gaming markets.

This meeting use to be held at least a decade ago, once the show floor opened and the gaming media where playing games on the show floor, the business was conducted. It was held in a small conference room at the convention center in 2001, and eventually they stopped having this presentation and just included it in their media event before the show. I think they are using the Nokia Theater again for several reasons. 1) The market is bigger involving more people so the people they have to invite to this presentation is significantly bigger then it was in 2001. and 2)Their is probally going be more media crashing the event trying to glean as much information as possible.

Yes they are complicating it for themselves. For the gamers it will seem business as usual. Except for the gamers at home there will be three ND. Two covering more on games that we know about for the Wii U and 3DS, and then one the usual Tuesday that will have the new games if they are not spoiled before hand.

I've been thinking this for awhile.  There was really no need for them to announce much of anything, especially this far in advance.  All it did was make people concerned or dismissive.  All they had to do was go ahead with their plans and there would barely have been a peep about it.

I think it was softening the blow. While there would have been a great deal of hype with the directs, if they would have dropped the "oh, btw, the main show won't have anything new" (compared to the directs, anyway) at the end of the last pre-E3 direct, there would have been meltdowns like we've never seen.

While it may have created undue bad press beforehand, lowered expectations could work to their advantage at this point.

Am I blowing things out of proportion, or are you just practicing damage control on a massive scale. I encourage you to delve into my posting history. Since you know me oh so well. Let me save you some time, because frankly I doubt you will put in the time. Seeing as it is so easy to stamp a label on someone. When you don't like what they have to say. I had next to nothing to say about the console from its unveiling to its launch, and nothing to say about it until fairly recently. I gave the console all the rope you guys insisted it needed to have before it could hang itself.

Nintendo supporters on these forums said it couldn't be judged until it was launched. Then you said well it needs at least a couple months. Then you said well give it half a year. Then that starts to roll around, and you say well wait to E3, and now that Nintendo is ducking that. You have moved the time table up to the holdiays. You know before the console, and the manufacturer can be judged. I will bet you anything if the console gets there. You will ask for yet another delay. I am sure if we all gave you a brick you would build a damn pyramid. With all the procrastinating you want to do.

Stop running away from the truth for crying out loud. Look at yourself in the mirror. Look at who you are defending, and how they have been treating you, and for what a misguided sense of loyalty. They aren't just taking advantage of you. They are straight up abusing you. They pawned a last gen console off on you, and said it was next gen. Hell it isn't even good tech in that regard. They haven't seen fit to get you any games, let alone make any for you. They have just about pissed off every third party developer on the planet, and now they wont even throw you a party at E3.

No I am afraid all those suppositions are entirely justified. In fact their behavior justifies a whole lot more. No group of gamers deserves to be treated like this. Have you for one instant thought that maybe Pachter is right to deride Nintendo. You act as if Nintendo needs to be saved, or it needs to be blindly defended. Look good companies deserve to stay around, but Nintendo just isn't a good company. I am not sure that has been the case for in many years. How many times do they have to kick you in the crotch before you start to listen to us naysayers.

Your the guy who has built a monument to Nintendo. I am just the guy who has watched from a distance, and has finally decided to warn you that it is starting to tip over, and you should get away from it before it falls on your head.

I donot see it that way... Gamers love games... investors numbers... press hands on... so they are just making sure every gets what they want, instead of just scrambling everything in a big pot...

^ Seriously man, you are taking every part of this way too seriously. "Look at myself in the mirror?" Quit being so dramatic, it's a freaking video game console.

Nintendo isn't using me and hasn't pawned anything off on me, since I haven't bought a Wii U yet. Who's the one throwing labels around again? Just what kind of gamer do you think I am?

Dude you are misinterpreting every possible thing and going so far overboard it would be borderline hilarious if it wasn't so very sad.

Quit assuming that every gamer has the same needs. Consider for a moment the possibility that I was content with the Wii, that I don't feel I was ever ripped off, abandoned, or mistreated by Nintendo. It's the truth. It doesn't make me a blind fanboy. It just means I like their games.

Video games, that's what we're talking about, right?

Don't pretend you haven't been prowling around Wii U threads all day dooming the console. I've had half a mind to report some of your posts for being such blatant flame bait, but I really couldn't be bothered to care. Just watch your tone in my thread here, or leave it be. You've had your say. Your thoughts on the matter have been heard.

Ahh sorry. I should probably go to the mirror and have a proper look at myself.

On topic, I just hope Nintendo do actually have a proper heap of Wii U games coming for E3. I'm slightly worried they're not doing a big event because they only have one or two games that can't be padded out over an hour.
