Actually, the article is talking about Sony's Xperia smartphone, not the PS4.

It should also be noted that this is a displ;ay technology and has nothing to do with the source device itself.  This won't be in the PS4 unless the PS4 comes with a display on it.

Yes I thought so first too. But the article itself mentiones PS4 and for Triluminos to work perfectly you need a signal that can adress the additional color depth or else it won't work properly and it just switches to classical RGB.

Foudn it.  You're right, it does address the PS4.  But I don't see why.   The color depth is actually nothing but standard RGB.   The problem is that most displays produce white via  very poor method.   All this does is enable a better method of white display.  It doesn't matter what the source device is so long as it can output RGB.

That additional color gamut you see in the pic isn't additional color from the source unit but adidtional color the display can show.

In other words, most displays srhink the color gamut of RGB itself so it doesn't produce the full range the source device is sending.  This display tech just allows more of that of that RGB signal to be properly shown.

The PS4-support is probably nothing more than a specialized color-profile.

Ha ha, way to spin a cheap solution as a 'feature.'

They could have used better LED's, but that cost more.

The sad thing is many of the general public will actually fall for it as an 'improvement.' Ah, marketing - convincing people stuff is magically better than other stuff, 2nd oldest profession in the world.

Its an improvment (Over LCD/LED). It gives you an almost OLED like color range with LCD/LED technology. While not superior to OLED its better than whats currently here.

But I guess it will be obsolete once Samsung/LG release mass market OLED TVs.

It's an improvement over LCD-displays with WHITE backlight. The article already says, it is a try to get the color range of LCDs with RGB backlight (meaning three distinct backlight-colors for the different subpixels), so it is NOT better than LCDs with RGB-backlight. And it is probably not better than these Sharop-thing with a fourth yellow subpixel for better colors.

Yes with white backlights like most TVs have. What normal TV has proper RGB Backlighting ? Fourth yellow subpixel ? Well no clue, sounds interesting. Sharp seems to manufacture really advanced Displays. Sony doesn't even make their own panels right ?

So they have to deal with whatever they get.

Sony got out of their contract with Samsung, they may be making the panels in house now (Though I doubt it).  I think part of their T.V. division mess was that contract.

Here is some info about the four colour pixel thing

"QUATTRON™ Exclusive Quattron™ color technology delivers a billion more colors, so you get a more powerful picture with brighter yellows, deeper blues, and richer golds. By adding 2 million yellow subpixels, Quattron creates a more realistic picture with greater detail and brightness – a feat that standard TV simply can't achieve."

I think I saw them in person once, and the picture was really good. But I haven't lived with one or really compaired it.  So not sure how impoarant it is.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
