12/13... I blame my non-nativeness. First time I hear the word fracking. Other than that they were quite easy.

Fracking is hydraulic fracturing, big in the news in the U.S. as there's something of a gas boom because of fracking.   That's sort of an American current events question, really.  I wouldn't expect people outside the US to know much about it, expect to hear more about it in the coming months and years, though.

13/13, I didn't even have to think on any of these.  All of these (except fracking) are covered more than once at every level of education.  All you have to do is pay attention, sad how many don't.

Gold has the element name 'AU' for Aurum. The names in the periodic table aren't based on english.

yea.. you know, I pointed that out myself in this very thread

english terms usually are very close to the latin ones (gold, silver and iron for example being notable exceptions), so I'm still convinced people could have deduced it's nitrogen (the only of the 4 options that started with an N) just from knowing that the element has the letter N in the periodic table - I'm sure all of those who had to look up the term did know N was used for "stickstoff"

Yes, I was answering as I read the text. You are right, I could have probably deduced that, but I wasn't thinking in this terms as I read the question, so I instead looked up the translation.

Marginally related to the topic, but i was greatly disappointed by how none of my coworkers knew that the Philippines used to be an American territory (the question came up over a 76-year-old Filipino-American doctor being reinvestigated, who claimed US citizenship by birth but listed his birthplace as the Philippines, and i had to explain to several people why that might not be a ridiculous error on his part)

I mean, how quickly we forget. The Japanese invasion of the Philippines was a big damn deal to us during WWII.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
