Well I was holding out some hope that the "few" events would end up being more than the two closed ones, but no such luck.

I did think it was weird that people were holding out for E3 megatons when basically every game they could make has been announced and most studios accounted for.
So I guess this means "more doomed" by VGC standards, because if the huge amount of games they've promised already didn't satisfy gaming message boards then this news that that's all there is should disappoint many. On the other hand, reality hasn't changed at all since before this announcement and they do have a lot of potential system-selling games coming.
I do prefer this Nintendo Direct format to one long E3 presentation most of which is irrelevant marketing BS and which often is disappointing if the game you wanted wasn't mentioned because it would be a whole year before you'd possibly hear about it again.

Did you miss the part about the several Nintendo Directs?

Yeah, at least they are having a few of those. I'm still pretty disappointed with this whole change though, it really doesn't feel like it is the result of anything positive happening at Nintendo. Good fan service, but nothing that will make the Wii U take off (which is desperately needed if it is going to keep any third party support).
Of course I would forgive them 100x over if they have a crazy brilliant plan like the E3 playable demos being pushed out to the Wii U eShop. I can dream.

Its not that they WONT be there, its that they seem to be REDUCING their presence. Rather than having a large conference with lots of media, andwith fans to generate hype and noise for all announcements they seem to be reducing the amount of media they are inviting (at least that is what the comments imply imo). They are also not doing anything for fans other than having a booth for games which I find strange. I just find it really strange that they are splitting the presentations as they will likely make less of a splash.

In a few days time the hoopla will have died down and we will just have to wait and see how this actually unfolds and what Nintendo has planned. People seem to think Nintendo is shying away from the spotlight whereas my impression is that they are trying to ensure the spotlight is firmly on the games.
I honestly don't think they are going to have a show which limits the exposure of their games to the gaming or global media, it would not make any sense.

They'll have a booth where people can play the demos of games (which will be available for the public) and they will also have a meeting with distributors/partners (not viewable for the public) about the future. But information about new games, hardware changes, software changes, etc will be given out on Nintendo Directs. |
The booth is their normal booth but they will be allowing press to come into the convention center early to try the games first. E3 isn't an event open to the public, so Joe Normal will not be able to walk up and play. My guess they will invite representives from IGN, Gametrailers, Gamespot, etc to this event. So it will be like the 3DS event they had last year.
The business meeting will take place in the same place where they usually do their press conference normally but it will be a shorter presentation on what they plan to do for the next 6 or months on the business side of thing. (Promotions, release dates, price cuts, incentive etc.) While it may not be streamed we will probally get the news from that even that is not put under NDA, like the release dates etc. I went to this type of show back in 2000 it is bland an last about 45 mintues but packed with information.
The public playing the games may just be them releasing the same demos they have on the floor into the eShops for the players to try the games. Though they may do what they did with the Wii and have a mall Wii U experience kioseks set up at select areas leading up to September. Though I'm expecting more of the former.
And between now and E3 we will be getting probally a few ND to showcase the software that will be featured on the convention floor during E3. Using last year as a guide they will probally have all the announcments we didn't know about in a Sunday ND and state that demos of select games will be avaible to play starting Tuesday (or better yet Immediatly).
| Fusioncode said: I still don't understand why, E3 is the biggest gaming event of the year. Revealing a ton of new software for the WiiU to millions of viewers would have been huge for the console. I highly doubt Nintendo Directs get the same viewers as an E3 press conference. |
The coverage will be the same. If you remember last year the ND they had on the sunday before their press event spoiled one of the bigger announcments of the conference. Because it was disected and over speculated on during the two days. So I doubt it will make a difference if they show a pre-recorded ND or have a live show, which they still are doing. The business meeting I went to before it will have a ton of infromation such as release dates and potential price cuts and it will be held at the same place and time of their usual press conference. And that will probally be covered by the press.

Yeah I have been saying this since they announced this. They will be able to convey their intensions better and in a cleaner format. They seperated out the business side and the game announcments. And by using pre-recorded ND they can aviod all SNAFUs that are related to trying to present game play live at the an event.
And the ND will probally be handled like they handled the ND before E3 last year. They will dissect each one until you litter are tired of hearing about the game. I doubt this will effect the coverage of Nintendo's E3 presence even though they are doing things differently.

Many people seemed to think that they wouldn't be there at all. I don't know how they thought this, but they did.
