Forums - Gaming - How smart do you want a gaming A.I. to be?

I will not be satisfied until playing with AI is indistinguishable from real human players. That's the goal we should all be striving for.

Smart but as long it's not smarter than me.

there is no need for better A.I. just simple smart gameplay is needed. and I dont even know if there is such a thing as smart A.I.

I'd much rather NPC A.I be much much better. I'm sick of playing games like GTA and the NPC's are just mindless things walking around, if I kill someone in GTA I want to see someone call the police rather then them just showing up

This would make every FPS unbeatable though.

I only demand if you give me an escort mission that the AI has the good sense not to be suicidal or constantly stuck on tricky things like "stairs" or "turning around a corner".

that is easily solved with the creepy watson technique

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

i would rather have some great a.i. enemies but with bad aiming in an ego-shooter as what we have nowadays in most games, horrible a.i. but every shot hits you on high difficulty.

and in other genres like racing games or strategy games i just want to have them acting as much as a human as possible. if i play a strategy game on easy the a.i. should play like someone else playing the game the first time and on highest difficulty like someone almost pro status.

I like dumb Ai. I like feeling like a badass. I always play it on the easy mode. I'm all about the experience and not the challenge.

Someone needs to make a "Weeping Angels" mod based off of that.

Civilization is a very good example of AI stagnation. The only thing that makes the AI better when increasing the difficulty level is that the computer starts with more units, settlers, trade more freely with each other, and develop techs faster. Basically it is just given an unfair advantage. You would think they wouldn't have to resort to such cheap tactics considering Civ is a TBS game and produced for the PC. So extra RAM hasn't done shit for the AI in the Civ series since I started playing Civ3-Civ5.

I disagree to an extent, at least for Civ II and IV. There's a fascinating article on gamasutra that Squilliam linked me to years ago about how the devs in IV stopped trying to create a "smart" AI and instead focused on "fun" AI. To a large degree, I'd say they succeeded: the AI in those games follows largely-rational rules, which means they are predictable to a great degree. The devs contrasted this with playing against human players, who can (and will be!) extremely unpredictable.

To reinforce this point, there was an interview with one of the guys who developed Goldeneye. He pointed out that the AI in that game, while widely hailed at the time, was actually ridiculously simple. In fact, they found that the AI was critically and unintentionally flawed in several basic ways. I'm sure you've noticed, for example, that enemies are unable to see you if you're on the other end of a window. But as they tried to fix it, the devs made a startling discovery: having the AI be that simple and stupid made the game fun. You're supposed to be a smooth, stealthy spy. Having an AI that's too dumb to do more than "player sighted, run to alarm," or even look through transparent surfaces, lets the player play to the game's core idea and strength (stealth and basic strategy) while also fooling the player into thinking things are more complex than they really are.

Basically, intelligence in an AI isn't necessarily ideal. If it reinforces what the game is trying to do, being stupid can be a good thing.
