Forums - Gaming - How smart do you want a gaming A.I. to be?

I do not think that artificial intelligence will ever be at a level where it can match human intelligence. I know that there is a feeling of euphoria about technology and computers... but artificial intelligence is based on mathematics and even the most advanced computers are outright stupid. They can not learn like humans do and will probably never be able to read humans minds or be able to handle adaptiveto different game situations.

In the other hand, a computer A.I. will be able to stick to certain rules. Thats the good thing about it. When you play online you will most certainly run into some gamer who will permanently insult you via headset, will try to cheat in order to win or who will play dirty whenever he can.

You will hopefully never see an A.I. in a racing game who will drive intentionally in the wrong direct so he can do some frontal crashes. Or an A.I. who is meant to be your teammate but will intentionally throw grenades at your feet or, if friendly fire is disabled, will wait for a situation where you are standing besides some explosive barrels...

So, all in all I am happy if an A.I. is simply working. I don't see games primarily as a challenge. They are entertainment for me. A game that is too simple and easy is not very entertaining... but it is also not entertaining when it becomes frustratingly difficult.

Play against Chess AI....

Chess AI is brutal

Perhaps because the best chess ai is better than the best players in the world, haha.

But to make chess ai good is surely easier (even though it is still difficult I'm sure) than to make a moving character in a game good (considering chess is turn based).

Yeah chess AI is probably way easier to do than Bioshock or COD.

i would rather have some great a.i. enemies but with bad aiming in an ego-shooter as what we have nowadays in most games, horrible a.i. but every shot hits you on high difficulty.

and in other genres like racing games or strategy games i just want to have them acting as much as a human as possible. if i play a strategy game on easy the a.i. should play like someone else playing the game the first time and on highest difficulty like someone almost pro status.

So from a field of 12 you want 3 racers to quit or stop along the track before the end, another 4 trying to ram you from behind at every corner, 1 escaping way out front driving flawlessly, 2 making an effort like you and another one driving the course in reverse?

What I would like is to be able to reason with AI.

i meant like they would drive in real life and not those online guys who don't care because it's only a game with a virtual life/damage/driver carreer

I will not be satisfied until playing with AI is indistinguishable from real human players. That's the goal we should all be striving for.

This would make every FPS unbeatable though.

No it wouldn't. Just because they are acting as human doesn't mean they have to be particularly skilled or incredibly trained. e.g. a Seal Team vs security guards is generally going to be a one way slaughter but they are all human. being indistinguishable from humans just means that their actions can be something that an equivalent human may perform, whether that is hide in a corner/run screaming, or yell for backup while seeking cover to keep you pinned down is all down to how skilled they are supposed to be at combat. For me better AI is about actions that you could imagine that an equivalent human would perform and then being able to ratchet up/down the skill and combat level accordingly.

What about games like Call of Duty where you're fighting against trained military forces?

Yeah it was a joke ofcourse. However 99% of the time you would simply be disqualified for dangerous driving, it is kinda hard to make them behave like humans and don't take unnecesary risks if you don't yourself. Plus for racing games it is mostly frowned upon as boring if they do act human.

For shooters they want us to believe that your fighting trained professionals or at least experienced crooks. How much chance do you stand yourself against a swat team or trained army. Instead we get Judge Dredd (new one) kind of fighting. One man army / bullet sponge with predictable enemies that keep coming in small groups. Kinda hard to make them behave like humans when humans would never fight that way.

No, because you're only thinking in terms of how gameplay is created with today's tech. Games would be completely redesigned if the AI was as smart as people. One example is, instead of hoards of enimies, you'd have a few.

As far as FPS goes, imagine multiplayer. If you could put 13 bots in a room with you and they all behaved as smart as you wanted them to, there would be no need to human players. Do you know what that MEANS? It means no more 13 year olds tea bagging and calling you homophobic names. haha
