Well, it's pretty difficult to look anywhere close to ray-tracing without using actual ray-tracing. And that won't happen next gen (maybe in the next one), at least in a big scale. Probably would be possible to use ray-tracing in single objects to make them look photorealistic, but a complete car would demand way more processing power.

gifs are often nice to look at but they are really not representing the games. that's why nsanity (and sometimes aldro) should post less gifs in threads which are about graphics because they tell us nothing about how the game looks when you play it.

I can't see PS3 putting out photo-realistic graphics.

I don't know if only my case but I think gifs looks way worst than the graphcs showed in HDTV... the only nice part in the gifs are the motion but for graphics the quality is way downgraded when you make the gif.
JPG pictures and YouTube videos downgrade the graphcis of the games too.

What part of the environments looks poor in GT5? I can say what specifc objects looks worst but overall the environments looks great.
Play the same circuit showed in the fig of PGR4 on GT5 and compare it... I can't say GT5 have worst environments than PGR4.

Did you even read through the thread ? It's completely obvious as it has been already mentioned several times.
low res gif can be deceiving. It's easy to tell the difference between real life and GT5 on a big screen and it's easy to see that PGR4 doesn't quite look like that gif.
I own GT5 and I know that it can look great but I also know that it can look like a PS2 game.
