Forums - Sony - God of War Ascension really isn't that good.

I stopped reading when you said yoy were a fan then immediately after said the story was short. Pretty much the same thing for every god of war. You might not have enjoyed it very much but its a solid god of war game. So far my only complaint is the menus. They are ugly as hell

Oh and i didnt juststop reading just because that. I dont want to take the chance of spoilers. So far im at the trophy controversy and feel it's on par with every god of war so far and even better than 1 and the psp versions

There's a difference with the previous games. Those ones had a longer progression of fights and more "important" things happened. in Ascension, you're basically fighting the same 3 bitches over and over again and you're not getting anywhere - at the end, Kratos didn't become a god, didn't become a god slayer, nothing. He just killed the 3 bitches who were tormenting him.

In god of war 1, he killed the god of war, Ares, and became the god of war in his stead. In god of war 2, he traveled back in time, restarted the war of the titans and the gods, killed athena, and bitch-slapped Zeus himself. In god of war 3, he destroyed the entirety of Olympus and killed all the titans at the same time. In Ascension, he killed 3 "Servants of Ares". Basically, there's no "god" in that game.

To be fair he gave it a 7.5 which means there's a lot he liked as well, unless he's commiting the all too familiar crime of score bloating

In my conclusion, I noted that it's still the same nonstop action and it still has the same god of war feel. Multiplayer is fun too. But it's disappointing because it could have been so much more. No score bloating. I liked the game, but it's not in the same god of war level.

only if he thinks the other games got higher scores than they deserve also.

3.) There's no variety in the weapons anymore - yea, Kratos gets 4 elements to his blades of chaos. Unfortunately, there's no clear cut definition on how the other 3 would be useful. They act in almost exactly the same way and the world weapons you pick up just don't cut it. You're basically blades of chaos guy with no other option.

4.) Jaggies, low definition textures, rushed production everywhere - in GoW 3, you could really go close up on Kratos and you wouldn't see anything wrong with him. In Ascension, he looks like a mess. There are very few moments where you'd be wowed by the graphics, and oftentimes you get to wonder why they put so little effort in the polish.

can't argue about the story, it's a bit bland...

..but i'm going to have to rage on you about the variety in weapons.  did you not look/upgrade your elements?   each of them adds moves to the blade of chaos that are amazingly useful and varied.  ice breaks enemy blocks for instance.  it says so right in the menu.  if you are fighting enemies that block and you aren't using ice you're doing it wrong.  i'm getting the feeling that those that think this game is "too hard" just expected to hit square over and over to win.

add to that the 5 world weapons and the three relics in addition to the rage meter (of course) and you've got a metric fuckton of variety in your arsenal.

graphics are great imo but i will say their aren't as many epic set peices as in GoWIII.  that's not really a dig on graphics though.  that's a dig on level design i suppose.  i have a feeling they "knew" a prequel wouldn't sell as well as a game with a "4" in it and set budget accordingly spending more time of innovating combat.  i have to say though, the combat is amazing.  ..for those that are able to play the game that is.

actually, aside from ice breaking blocks, is there any other difference among the 4 elements? none. they all move at the same speed, they all do the same amount of damage, and they do pretty much the same combos with just different looks. the world weapons have so few actions it's ridiculous to consider them as "part of Kratos' arsenal. the relics are also bland, in that they do one click uses. does the amulet do anything else? no it doesn't. it has a long cooldown and you use it on one guy and you forget about it for 20 seconds.

compare that to previous god of war games where Kratos had an array of weapons that really did do different things. to name a few, the cestus from god of war 3 and the barbarian hammer from god of war 2 were completely different from the blades of chaos and they had a whole different set of move lists. aside from that, they required completely different timing and situational uses. kratos also had a bow, running boots, wings, not to mention that he had the blade of olympus itself.

so now which one has variety?

Isn't this a prequel(if that is spelled correctly) of God of War 1? If so, i wouldn't expect to fight gods, i think this is a game that took place before he started doing that.  I am not entirely sure though because i haven't played any of the God of War games but watching something about them though i somewhat understand the premise of the game.

Really... you could pretty much use the same argument for weapons in any game. GoS had spear and shield... which was pretty limited. Three had hades weapon which was the same as kratos

I´ll start playing the game soon, so could you give me an advice about the elemental weapons?...you mention ice is good for enemies that block, but what about the other elements?...what are the best specific situations to use the other three?

The game may not be as amazing as God of War III (easy 10/10) but your points for God of War: Ascension are mostly bollocks. 1) The game isn't too short, 8-10 hours is pretty average for the genre, in-fact it's longer than most games in the genre. I agree that the story-telling was pretty bad, I had to play a 2nd time to understand what I was doing, where I was going and the point of it all. The story is there though, it was just too minimal and unclear. 2) I don't think you ever got to understand the story/characters. 3) There's still plenty of variety in weapons. There's 4 elements to use with the blades all of which make noticeable differences to gameplay, 5 sub-weapons and 2 secondary items which are usable in combat. 4) Are you fucking serious? This is one of the cleanest and easily the best-looking game on consoles. The only problem is some of the textures take a little while to fully load. Aside from that it looked very polished, Kratos himself is the single best-looking character model in gaming (even on PC) so I don't know what you're looking at. 5) Multiplayer is varied enough and we've been promised free DLC in the future. How many more modes can you think of that weren't included? I've had more enjoyment with God of War: Ascension's multiplayer than any other game this generation. The single-player is very varied, the environments and gameplay situations are constantly changing throughout the 8-10 hour game. There were 3 epic moments; 1. Hecatonchires. 2. Snake of Delphi. 3. The final boss fight. This game is easily worth $60/£40. Conclusion: The reviewers giving the game less than an 8/10 (only minority) are wrong. The visuals: 10/10. The sound: 9/10. The gameplay: 9/10. The story: 8/10. The multiplayer: 9/10. Overall God of War: Ascension deserves a 9/10 (anywhere from 8-9 is fair, below 8 is too low and above 9 is too high). It's a great game that has definitely not come close to tarnishing Sony Santa Monica's stellar reputation.
