I find it funny how some people only realised now that GoW games are light on story. The interesting part is the mithology. The story is completely ridiculous to non-existant. Kratos is angry, kratos kills. Its about as deep as the Hulk.

GoW games are for good graphics and mindless hack and slash fun.

which GoW games have you played?

obviously none or he has an extremly short attention span.

the way kratos looks, his weapon, his motive, how he became a servant all have a background story. and more

exactly from what happened to his brother, his mother, what he did to his family etc etc

kratos' motivations for what he does and his behavior in general are explained in detail throughout the series

i didn't realise this myth that kratos is just senselessly angry is still going around

although i'd be lying if i didn't admit that i expected ascension to give more details on his past but if fell short there ( the only area that it did imo )

So I look at the review scores on metacritic, and being a GoW fan, I thought they were being unfair in saying that "it's the same old GoW" and gave it a low score. However, upon playing the thing, I recognize that it really deserves those scores, or even lower.

1.) The story is too short, and it's about something even shorter - the plot is sooooo long-winded that it's ridiculous. It details such a small part of Kratos' life, but the game forcibly renders it to go on longer and longer. There are far too many pointless areas and there are just too few story details that you can't get into what he's doing. In fact, halfway through, I didn't even understand what the hell I was doing anymore.

2.) Aside from being short, the story is simply bland and pointless - compared to other GoW games where you're actually doing something epic, such as in GoW 3 where you fought the gods themselves, this time you're just fighting 3 crazy women who keep yelling the same thing over and over: "death for you!". There's no epic boss battle to be had here, because the furies are 3 pay grades below what we've seen Kratos fighting.

3.) There's no variety in the weapons anymore - yea, Kratos gets 4 elements to his blades of chaos. Unfortunately, there's no clear cut definition on how the other 3 would be useful. They act in almost exactly the same way and the world weapons you pick up just don't cut it. You're basically blades of chaos guy with no other option.

4.) Jaggies, low definition textures, rushed production everywhere - in GoW 3, you could really go close up on Kratos and you wouldn't see anything wrong with him. In Ascension, he looks like a mess. There are very few moments where you'd be wowed by the graphics, and oftentimes you get to wonder why they put so little effort in the polish.

5.) Multiplayer is fun but not varied enough for the purchase - The single player story can be completed in about 8 hours if you're going around looking for everything. That's 8 hours of no variety nor epic moments. So basically you're buying the game for the multiplayer, but that alone isn't enough for your 60 bucks.

Conclusion: Disappointment. I was at launch day and I was in line. This time the reviewers have it right. It just isn't all that good. It's still GoW, it still has non-stop action, but it has less of everything we've seen before. I understand it's not a numbered game in the series, and it's more like a spin-off, but Santa Monica really tarnished their reputation with this one.

7.5/10

1) Agree

2) Agree

3) Agree but didn't bother me. Possibly because I use the blades 90% of the time in the other games. I would argue against the elements not adding much though because I feel they were a nice addition. The secondary weapons on the other hand (spear, shield, hammer, sword) were not that awesome.

4) No bro. Not even going to go into Digital Foundry or screenshots. Just no. Hell.. fuck it. Ill post just a few pics =>

5) I love the MP, but I can understand you not liking it.

What kept me interested in Ascension was the work of the environmental artists of SSM. You want to continue to see the next area in this greek journey. The atmosphere is fantastic.

What are you talking about? All I did was share my opinion, that the series has NEVER been about deep story, nor has it ever had the greatest or most original gameplay. Most people I've ever talked to who like these games, like them for the same reason they liked the old DMC games or Bayonetta, because they're outrageously over the top, and that's where they find the fun in them.

What exactly are you going to report, that I dared to have my own opinion? If you think the series is "Awesome", more power to you. The OP obviously didn't think this game was, so he disagrees with you too. Nothing in what little I wrote was "boarderline trolling", so what precisely are you "reporting"? I don't come here to troll people, nor AM I troll. I come here for the same reason most others do, I would imagine. To share my 2 Cents. If you don't like my 2 Cents, that's not my problem. Good day.

your comment wasnt even close to the topic at hand. just because i have an opinion of something doesnt mean i can freely say what i think of it whenever i want. if i thought ps3 is the shittiest console ecver i couldnt go into a thread about it and say the ps3 is a bad console

Alrighty, if you say so. Problem with that is, that wasn't even the real meat of my original statement. You chose to focus on one part of what I said, got mad about it, and told me "I'm lucky I wasn't reported". Not terribly friendly at all, wouldn't you say? The brunt of my statement was pointing out that most people I've ever heard talk about GoW agree that they love how outlandish and over the top it is. Period. Just because in getting to saying that, I threw in my own personal aside the series has never been "fantastic", well, oh darn. I didn't say it was the shittiest series ever, did I? I never personally got into it, but I certainly wasn't talking shit about it. I honestly just think you overreacted to one part of what I said, when in reality what I said wasn't even meant to be negative.

Sorry you took it that way.

I only agree with you on the story, everything else is 'A' material in my opinion. It is a prequel so I was 't expecting Kratos to have a cache of swords or anything, but I thought SSM did better by giving the blades different elemental powers which have different special abilities and moves. That was brilliant. Those can be switched between battles and strategy can be employed with ease. For instance, you can use one form of the blade at the beginning to farm orbs to boost your character, but if the tide of battle is changing you can switch it up to farm green orbs instead, or you can change in between to use another one with an attack that will hit all the enemies. It's great and fun.

you never played one have you? the stories have always been deeper than most games ever made. the narrative story telling by gia is also epic

I am appauled. Look at this: Spartan warrior that revolts against his God after his family been killed, discovers he is the son of one of them and decides to kill them all because they are selfish and unruly.God of war storyline in a nuttshell. Theres nothing deep about it. You want deep? Go play metal gear solid or kingdom hearts, dont make me laugh.

Oh and for the record i kept it vague because of spoilers. Sadly for you i have played all of them except 3. I quite enjoy the mythos.

While it is convoluted and somewhat messy: The MGS games do have a rather deep story/meaning.

_______________

In MGS1 I believe it's the whole -Gene's are not a representative of a person and his doings.

_______________

In MGS2 it's the whole manipulative act which is called Meme.
"Meme's are the societal counterpart to "genes." Genes make up our physical identity, and memes make up our societal identity. "

_______________

MGS3 wasn't really that convoluted and it was rather straight forward. Anyone that plays it will know the meaning. One could call it "Scene". Setting a scene when The Boss pretends.. and what it all leads to :P.

_______________

MGS4 ..boy, tries to tie all that up XD. While it is hard and leads to some messy stuff: I still loved it.

You know you can take any games story and give the storyline in one sentence right.  That doesn't mean that it barely has a story at all.

For example:  Mass effect = Human soldier who works with other alien species to save the world.

Uncharted = Treasure hunter who goes on a search for the greatest treasures on Earth.

Assassin's Creed = Modern day hero relives his ancestors past to save the world.

Far Cry 3 = Man trapped on island has to kill to survive to save himself and his friends.

TLOU = Man takes girl across the US and fights both humans and infected.

Crysis 2 & 3 = Explosions, explosions, aliens, explosions, humans, aliens, explosions.

Gears of War = A war between humans and creatures called locusts.

I can keep going if you like, but I think I got my point across

I really dont get the critics about Axcension only have one weapon. I have played all the God of War games and yet i have played 90% with he Blades, 5% with the cestus in God of War 3 and 5% with the Spartans Army in Ghost of Sparta. All the other weapons are boring and useless in my eyes.

And honestly if you expect to kill gos in this game than anything other than dissapointment would be a surprise.

The game lenght is OK in fact it is longer than God of War 3 which i have finished in 7 hours.

And the last boss battle is some of the incrediblest scenes in the God of War Universe.

All a future god of War game need now is a new mythology.
