Forums - Gaming - You Can't Build A PS4: Why Sony's Next Console Is Truly Next-Gen And Your PC Isn't

His mistake is in comparing raw specs and guts in the console to what you can get on a PC. Hardware in a console is not the same as hardware in a PC, developers on consoles have pretty much direct access to the entire power of the hardware and they are not designed the same way.

Can you get that exact same setup as a PS4 in a PC? No, it's not possible. Can you get other things to accomplish the same performance? Yes. It just won't do it the way a PS4 (or any console) does.

Outdated thinking. Your idea was true when consoles basically ONLY played games. Consoles are getting more like PC's in that they perform many functions and have a larger OS running in the background. The hardware has to perform so many more tasks nowadays, so that console performance leap from lower specs just ain't gonna happen like it did in the good old days, when consoles JUST played games. Yes there is a performance boost, but it's getting smaller and smaller.

No the idea is still right, which lots of people pointed out to the author of that article and why he had to try and save face by essentially posting a retraction later. You can't compare a PC vs a console by specs. The console is optimized and streamlined in a way that the PC will never be. That's how a console can ship with half a GB of RAM and still run Battlefield 3. Not comparable to a PC, where that isn't even enough RAM to run an OS.

A PC doesn't need to be designed the same way with the same architecture. In fact it cannot be designed the same way. But relying on the raw power of ever-improving components, PC's will always stay ahead.

funny that you pay so much for electronics and graphics are that important for you (at least it seems like that when you talk about ps4) but you won't build a gaming rig and probably didn't have one the last years even with games on console with only 720p and 30fps.

Hummmmmm... PC give so much trouble to play games... I need to get home after work and just put the media into the drive and play... PC never give me that.

And graphics are the most important thing in the next-gen consoles.

Pointless OP is pointless.

1) of course no current PC will be identical because its custom design.
2) but that distinction is pointless because the parts used are MOBILE VARIANTS and are by default lower-spec'd components.

It wouldn't be difficult to build a PC that easily out does any of the upcoming consoles even when including the overhead from traditional Windows or Mac environment.

Now that is still a load of rubbish because of the entirely different game design philosophies employed between PCs and game consoles.

A game for a console is built TO THE HARDWARE.

A game for the PC is built TO THE OS and the OS then generically talks to the hardware.

This is why a game on a far under-powered console can achieve similar experience to a PC.

Yeah, you just need to select the game in your Steam library and click play. No need to insert any pesky media. :-p

Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

It's like the steam have all games in the world lol lol lol.

We can discuss everything you want but PC is easy to play games than consoles.

The "PC will always be more powerful" comments are true in theory.

Yes I know some PC's can run Crysis 3 at Ultra/Max settings and current or next gen consoles can't touch that. But how many PC's can do that? Your average PC in the homes in the United States can not currently do that.

So it's more than a little misleading when you see Crysis 3 running on Hi-Performance setting for a PC. Because there are so many PC's out there that can't do that. Sure Crysis 3 could look that good... for some maybe

However when you see footage of The Last Of Us, every PS3 will be capable of doing exactly that.

So yes PC's can always look better than Consoles. But not at a Console price point.

If the PC community would like to provide a link to that PC that is $250 that outperforms a PS3/360, I'd love to see it

sorry but pc was ahead of Ps4 in 2010 lol Just look at this f*ckin turtle! haha Seriosly i could pull up tons of photo realistic stuff for PC gaming though. Consoles have a long way to go. Maybe by 2024 they will have caught up.

Nobody said PS4 is ahead of PC. But with enough optimization it could outperform PCs twice its price. PC games quality are always "multiplaform" because they make it compatible with a great range of different CPUs, GPUs, etc. That's not the case with a PS4 exclusive game. No game is specifially made for GTX680 for instance, which is why the GTX 680 can handle any 1080p PC game effortlessly. It can take a lot more than Crysis.

Yes i relize this completely and something that me and my friend discusses.  Consoles and PC for a few years will be very similar once again in terms of graphics.  Developers in most cases develop for consoles not PC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abGW1bk1nmM - The Myth of Console Optimization. This guy took a 7800GT, PS3s GPU, and put it to work under fraps for recording his games.

Optimization is nice and all but it's not black magic. For the PS3 to even run the latest games, games had to be in Sub-HD, little to no AA, etc.

Finally, other than gaming a console can't really do anything.

The article is mostly nonsense but either way, certain PCs were stronger than PS4, are stronger and they will be. By now AMD is already researching and developing the next iteration of their APUs which will be even more power-efficient and powerful than what is to be used in PS4/NextBox. Both only take a snapshot hardware from a long-term evolution that AMD follows.
One disadvantage the new consoles have: the performance is now easily compared to usual PCs and I expect a lot of discussions between console gamers and PC gamers in the next years. Well, we will see.
The main difference consoles alwasy had (to me) is that the games make the difference and I expect this to be very true with Sony. What strategy MS follows has yet to be seen but I won't be surprised by anything because I think they want a seemless integration of Windows 8 across all platforms which could turn out bad for Xbox-exclusives (meaning they could only be console-exclusive).

If a PC is easy to play with also highly depends on your personal knowledge and skills, also. Most PC users don't have decent knowledge and/or skills. They better stay at consoles.
