And the Vita is facing even worse issues.  The whole videogame industry as we know it can be at a crossroad.  Things may change, where you aren't going to get the gaming you know and love, but be pushed into platforms without regular controllers, because the market spoke up.  Things can be changing.

Heck, as an example, I will give myself.  Ok, maybe I am a rare exception, but I have seen HUGE downward mobility and don't have the same funds I used to.  I am also older and any day I can get a decent meal, to the gym, and also tabletop gaming once a week in, I am set.  As of now, what is offered as console choices, and even portable, isn't as strong of a drive.  To be blunt here, a tablet that allows me to access the Internet and play boardgame stuff, is of far greater interest now.  I just can't see myself adding any new console.  And this is from someone who has had everything, and does game design and oversees a group on Facebook dedicated to gaming.  Yes, this is me.  Sorry, but adding a 3DS just isn't here now, nor is a Vita, nor any of the consoles.  Why the heck do I drop like $400+ for initial run of games, and the platform when I hardly am playing what I have now?  I also work full-time, and being on an electronic device with my free time isn't a top priority.

Am I some sort of rare exception, or normal?  If I am normal, what does that say about the state of the industry?  Don't think Nintendo is the only one with a problem here.

There is far more excitement for ps4- true next gen system- then there is for wiiU. Google trends confirms that. And of course nintendo is all alone. Sony and MS will have the backing and support of every publisher on earth in order to make their consoles a success, which is something nintendo doesn't have.

Firstly, its Sony AND MS. What healthy business relies on support of your competitor in order to survive? A competitor that wants to eat you btw.

Secondly, theres an ever decreasing number of third-parties, and those third-parties are becoming increasingly draconion in their behaviour to console companies. Its no wonder the rest are heading towards App dev.

Thirdly, Japanese third parties are currently developing more content for Wii U than PS4 (that we know of). 3DS has more development support than Vita too, you think this trend won't allow for easy porting of assets to Wii U?

Fourthly, what makes you think Kinect 2 won't continue to disenfranchise core gamers? MS is in it for the money, its clear as the sky is blue.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Around the Network

Another nonsense thread. With the release of delayed first party titles such as Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Wii Fit, Lego City Undercover during the first half of this year and at least two out of the following - 3D Mario, Mario Kart, X and/or Retro's new game - you're going to see the Wii U having an installed userbase between 10 and 15m by the end of the year.

The main reason why the Wii didn't get ports last gen is because of Hollywood giving the Wii a nonstandard rendering pipeline.

This isn't going to be a problem for the Wii U thanks to Nintendo finally ditching the TEV Unit in favour of traditional programmable shaders. That, combined with a superior installed userbase and the fact that Nintendo have been forward thinking with regards to the Wii U's architecture means that porting between the Wii U/PS4 and 720 will be easy, and therefore inexpensive, to do.

Now that Nintendo have actually started to do things right you're going to see plenty of third party support for the Wii U this gen from major publishers and developers as well as plenty of support from indie devs thanks to Nintendo choosing a Steam-esque model for the Wii eShop and the fact that Nintendo are giving tens of thousands of pounds worth of software free with each dev kit.
