Around the Network

Some of the paranoid logic in this thread is unbelievable.

Any criticism directed toward Nintendo becomes "hate". Any speculation that isn't positive about Nintendo is, apparently, "wanting them to fail". It's ridiculous and childish. ONE BLOODY GUY at 4A Games said the Wii U had a horribly slow CPU and suddenly we have a thread full of people cheering because their publisher, THQ, went out of business. Seriously? That's petty and sad.

This persecution complex is getting out of hand. For good or bad, Nintendo is where they are at because of their own decisions. Customers don't have to buy, or even like, Nintendo. Publishers and developers don't have to support Nintendo if they think they have better options elsewhere. Nintendo is not entitled to these things.

I read what Cliff Bleszinski and, even though I disagree with him, I see nothing about hate for Nintendo. I see speculation based on the direction of the market but nowhere does he indicate that Nintendo going software only is something that he wants.

This hyper-defensiveness is edging over into crazy-land.

^If I actually see majoraty of Nintendo fans, even as far as fanboys cheering for THQ gone away, I would feel ashamed to be calling myself a gamer...

Nintendo is the worst partner for 3rd parties in terms of business relationships(games don't sell well) and technical limitations.

That's debatable.  Technical limitations aren't always considered a negative thing.  A lot of third parties like to have games on consoles where the budgets don't need to be very high. EA and Activision don't enjoy having to spend $30 million to make a game and then see some of them struggle to break even.  Casual games on Wii and DS sold in huge numbers, and all of the smart third parties raked in money which they could then use to fund expensive HD games on the 360/PS3.  It helps to offset high development costs for HD games.

Nintendo has definitely improved their relationships with many third parties since the start of the Wii U in early 2011.  Letting developers give them advice on what to do/ what not to do with the hardware, as well as giving select third parties access to very early dev kits that normally only first-parties would have.

They're also spending a great deal of money on investing in third-party exclusives like LEGO City, Bayonetta, etc that definitely speaks to the fact that they're aware of their reputation and they're looking to change it.

It also seems appropriate to mention that Nintendo with their Wii U and 3DS eShop has become the most indie-friendly console platform to release games on.  Way easier than Microsoft and Steam, and even putting Sony's indie-friendliness to shame.

Look at PS4, that is what you get when you ask developers to help make the console. Comparing Wii U to PS4 in terms of ease of development is like comparing apples to oranges. To say that Nintendo asked developers for help on making the Wii U is ridiculous. It's clear they did not. Nintendo does what Nintendo wants. That's the way its always been and nothing has changed.

Don't assume that just because Nintendo decided not to make Wii U as powerful as the PS4 that Nintendo refused to listen to anything third parties said to them.  Nintendo most definitely asked for input when designing Wii U.  There is evidence of it.  I remember reading about it during E3 2011 when Wii U was first announced.   It's not always about graphics.   The most powerful machine has never, ever been the market leader in any console generation.

It's about more than just graphics/power.

.... I just said that.

I never said i wanted to enter the stock market . Still doesnt mean your not using strawman tactics to try downplay the point im making, and worse thing is when i pointed out to you thats what you where doing and explained how you didnt even deny it, instead you went on to another strawman tactic to try defeat my 2nd point -_- . How can the 3DS be failing if its YoY sales are going up? really?.

Down YOY everywhere but Japan, a small market that doesn't follow the trends of the rest of the world. Short term success in the hear and now is what the 3ds has (in Japan and Japan only). I again bring up the analogy of the cd player salesman in an Ipod age. Sales of cd players didn't just vanish over night. People in the world (except Japan) play games on phones, they don't have pocket space for handhelds anymore. If you think high Japanese sales are the end all be all and that nintendo handhelds will be around forever, thats your business. And the wiiU is in an even worse spot arguably.

And the Vita is facing even worse issues.  The whole videogame industry as we know it can be at a crossroad.  Things may change, where you aren't going to get the gaming you know and love, but be pushed into platforms without regular controllers, because the market spoke up.  Things can be changing.

Heck, as an example, I will give myself.  Ok, maybe I am a rare exception, but I have seen HUGE downward mobility and don't have the same funds I used to.  I am also older and any day I can get a decent meal, to the gym, and also tabletop gaming once a week in, I am set.  As of now, what is offered as console choices, and even portable, isn't as strong of a drive.  To be blunt here, a tablet that allows me to access the Internet and play boardgame stuff, is of far greater interest now.  I just can't see myself adding any new console.  And this is from someone who has had everything, and does game design and oversees a group on Facebook dedicated to gaming.  Yes, this is me.  Sorry, but adding a 3DS just isn't here now, nor is a Vita, nor any of the consoles.  Why the heck do I drop like $400+ for initial run of games, and the platform when I hardly am playing what I have now?  I also work full-time, and being on an electronic device with my free time isn't a top priority.

Am I some sort of rare exception, or normal?  If I am normal, what does that say about the state of the industry?  Don't think Nintendo is the only one with a problem here.

I don't think Nintendo would ever end up being just a software company, the Wii U will be at least as successful as the GameCube which turned a decent profit for them.

Perhaps next gen Nintendo should focus solely on their next portable device, imagine the sheer volume of quality software that would get published, I mean they've already merged their portable and home console development teams together so I don't see this being such a wacky out their possibility.

Gamecube wasn't profitable, the GBA was.

Check up on your history.  The Gamecube might not have sold huge numbers, but under Satoro Iwata it actually managed to pull a profit.  That was one the things that convinced The owner of Nintendo to hand of controll to him.  His mangement capabilties are top notch.  The GBA on the other hand.......well yeah it made billions.

Plus I don't think they ever sold the GCN at a loss.  Maybe when they knocked it down to 99 but they were still probably making profit off of it.  So if you never sell a console for a loss then how the hell would you lose money on it even if it only sold 22m?

But wasnt the lots of storys before and even Nintendo saying how they asked Developers for input on the WiiU etc etc??. Now not saying this Conspircy thoery is true. But if it was wouldnt it of been possible for them to give Nintendo false info so they would try make them fail??.

Well whoever they asked, it certainly wasn't western developers. This is still old Nintendo. Every single decision was made in Japan and if they consulted any developers, it was Japanese developers.

Nintendo is the heart and soul of gaming and therefore is gaming, the rest are just big company money man impersonators who wanted a peace of the pie, we are lucky to still have an oringinal "real" video games company in our presence, an original, the spirit of Nintendo will never die and can't be killed.

People said that about Sega back in the day..

Oops.

Those times when SNES and Genesis competed in the market fans kept saying all sorts of stuff. Sega still continues to make software. Nintendo can join them if things go bad. The Spirit of Nintendo thus continues to live thereafter.

There is far more excitement for ps4- true next gen system- then there is for wiiU. Google trends confirms that. And of course nintendo is all alone. Sony and MS will have the backing and support of every publisher on earth in order to make their consoles a success, which is something nintendo doesn't have.

Sony fans hate Nintendo because they think they are on some sort of righteous crusade. It is almost as though Sony fans think if Sony wins, that Sony will house and feed them.

In reality, Sony is in a very desperate situation. Their company is in disarray. They lack any sort of competent leadership. They are losing billions of dollars a year. They are bleeding employees by the thousands per year. Their last console, the PS3, lost tens of millions of customers from the previous generation, and hundreds of millions of game sales.

Their first incursion into the 8th generation of gaming with the Vita, saw them brutally mauled by the 3DS. Which Sony fans were cheering arms, arms waving up in the air, as a handheld that was dead before it was even off the ground. Now 3DS has enjoyed a year and a half reign as the fastest selling dedicated gaming hardware currently on the market.

Anyway, you can cross THQ off the list. They were the first company of the identified bunch to perish. Although, I would say Activision and EA are companies that want to put their games where they can sell. They don't particularly care about what videogame company is on top.

Nicely written but Sony fans are deaf to this topic. They doom-say Nintendo all the way and thats kinda funny because as you stated Sony is not in a good shape right now. They are selling buildings to gain money and NOBODY doom-say them. Its always Nintendo. Nintendo who have like billions of dollars in their bank and can survive EVEN if the Wii U flat out fails.

Sony need to have a success with their newest product. Otherwise Sony is (obviously) doomed.
