Forums - Gaming - “Skyrim was generic” says Witcher 3 game Director

Skyrim is generic and the Witcher 2 was probably the second best purchase to Halo 4 for my 360.

Around the Network

I haven't played much of Skyrim, but that was my experience with Oblivion. Repetitive dungeon designs, repetitive NPCs, repetitive quests. It's like they made a few (ugly) models, then copy and pasted them all over everywhere to make a "huge", "open world" game.

From what I've played of the Witcher 2, it was better in this respect, especially in regards to NPCs and quests, but the Souls games top them both.  Especially Demon's Souls.  Some of Dark Souls' larger areas lost that attention to detail.

From a company that is very respected by gamers im shocked by this comment. Skyrim is loved for many reasons and generic isnt the reason.

Generic is exactly the word I would use for Skyrim. I haven't played any Witcher game, but kudos to them for having actual taste.

And, the most generic movies, music, books and games are often the most popular ones. Lowest common denominator and all that. I'm not saying that I never enjoy generic things but the majority mass of any one market is likely swayed by the simpler things.

Call of Duty games, Twilight books, Transformers movies and Rihanna's music are perfect examples.

Actually Call of Duty 4 was very innovative and is the one that became popular.  Twilight isnt really generic either as I cant think of any kind of movies or books like it right off the bat.  The movies arent that great because of bad acting/directing not because it being generic.    Ill give you the rihanna one but ive already come to terms that music is a lost cause.  There is still great music being made they just arent heard of usually

Call of Duty 4 was great and fairly innovative, the ones after were not. Twilight is the very definition of generic, it takes well used mythology and throws in gimmicks, is poorly written, has a juvenile storyline and cardboard characters, including but not limited to, a main character that is a hollow shell of a being. There are plenty of generic movies that don't have bad acting or directing, most Judd Apatow movies fit under that description.

Yes, there is still great music being made and the same goes for movies and games. My point is that the flesh of the market and most of the big sellers are the generic ones, simply because they are generic. The more medicore something is, the broader its appeal, if you start going into depth in one direction, you will alienate many people one way or another, so people opt for the middle, or the lowest common denominator, like I mentioned.

This is not my theory, this is how society, and entertainment especially, really works.

I'll agree with a lot of things you say but if I dont think the game industy or movie industry necessarily works that way.  A lot of movies that are popular are the ones that stand out.  Sure every once and a while you will have something like twilight which doesnt deserve it's fame but other in recent years like Inception, The Dark Knight, Avatar, etc are the ones that grow popular and for a reason.

Avatar!? You'd have to tie me up and ducktape my eyes open to force me to watch it again. I'd choose to watch Twilight instead of it without a doubt. There hasn't been a more generic, boring and predictable movie since... since... I don't even know since when. It's one of the worst movies I have ever seen, I'll never understand what some people seen in it.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

A lot of it is because the beautiful scenery.  I dont know if you watched in 3D or not at the theaters or not but it was beautiful.

Well Skyrim was generic.
Think about how different Morrowind was, and think how dull Skyrim was in comparison. The only people who will argue are those who have not played Morrowind and old rpgs at their time of release.

I beat the Witcher 2 and although it's really good I thought it was too short so hopefully having an open World will fix that. As far as Skyrim goes it may be generic but the atmosphere it has at times is amazing. I remember the first time I played it was in the middle of a snow storm which helped to make the game feel even more immersive to me.

I do agree though that it has a lot more flaws than either the Witcher 2 and Dark Souls but it is also a much more ambitious game than either of them. If Bethesda fixes even half the flaws in the next game it would put the series on a whole new level that very few games ever achieve.

I agree, honestly. For the 15 hours that i played it, i cant even remember one character. I also got bored of dungeon crawling and the story wasn't all that appealing, not to mention my companion made the combat retarded easy.

Combat is retarded easy without the companion too. Elder Scrolls games are notorious for making you overpowered no matter what choices you make.

The Witcher 2 is no Dark Souls either. The challange you get there is for the most part due to the overwhelming number of enemies you get to fight or their defenses against your attacks (which tend to drag the battles longer than they should be).

Games are the same way.  The ones that are popular are usualy the ones that stand out.  Yes Call of Duty stopped innovating but it became popular from innovation as well.  Even "The Witcher is prety popular and i dont think we would call it generic. How about Uncharted, God of War, Gears of War, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, etc?  Are those generic?  No, they took great ideas and ran with them.  Good games get popular.

Sure some things will get popular for not much reason but most of the time this is not the case.  The music industry is about the only industry like this right now and I blame the media and radio stations on that.

The Dark Knight; a gritty superhero film, hmm, we haven't had a lot of those lately. Avatar is Pocahontas and has a story that has been told a dozen times with slight variation, the selling point there was the amazing visual design, CGI is likely the most overused and generic thing in movies today. Inception is original enough, I'll grant that, but every rule has exceptions (like I have mentioned when I say "most" instead of "all"). Its (Avatar) the movie version of CoD, full of gloss and shine and impressive noise but with a severely lacking core offering.

Call of Duty got more popular the less it innovated and the more hollywood bells and whistles were thrown in, lowest common denominator cannot be demonstrated in a better way than Call of Duty today. Uncharted and Gears of War, well its not like 3rd person cover based shooters are rife in the 7th generation, huh? Quippy main character with one-liners, Tomb Raider inspiration, Indiana Jones etc combined with cover based shooting (mind you, I love the Uncharted games but not beacuse they are amazingly original, the pacing and seamless gameplay are what lures me in). Gears of War; cover based shooter with oversized space marines and gore, terribly original as well. Halo and GTA? GTA is moving backwards and even implementing cover based shooting and "realistic" physics and ragdoll animations all over the place, the missions are also bland and uninspiring (GTA was fresh and unique at one point but those days are long gone), Halo is as generic as every other alien based shooter we have today, the first one innovated, the others are cash-in's with decent multiplayer. It is also noteworthy that Halo keeps selling more the more base and generic it gets.

Assassin's Creed is very similar to Prince of Persia, not much groundbreaking and the two first ones were repetetive as well, especially the first one if filled with poor and arbitrary writing, predictable plot twists and overused gameplay elements such as counter-attacks and "remove all skills and power after letting the player be all powerful and cool in the opening". God of War, 3rd person action button masher, done before, lots of gore, ridiculously oversized bosses and painfully manly lines and setting for maximum effect. These aren't bad games at all but they are generic in one or more ways and at the very center of design, there's no denying it. If you apply the same eye to every game, there are few that escape the same "generic" label but that's my whole point to begin with; the vast majority of games are generic.

Good games get popular? No, they don't. There is no such default in the industry and market and there are plenty of shitty games that sell well. Its not that black and white and simple, I'm afraid. King's Bounty games aren't selling very well, the Settlers games don't sell well, Metro 2033 didn't sell well, Mount & Blade hasn't sold very well, Risen has sold poorly, plenty more examples of good games that don't get popular. Flashy ads, gimmicks, celebrity voice acting, shiny visuals, hollywood effects, gore and other cheap means sell many games, a lot more than raw talent, good writing and solid gameplay. I'm sorry but that's the way it is.

Most of the time, generic elements draw in more customers, whether it be music, movies or games. Games have existed before the PS3 and 360 and Wii.

You have a chance of talking about your game and their accomplishments on an interview and all you do is bash a much more commercially successfull game. Just great.

A lot of it is because the beautiful scenery.  I dont know if you watched in 3D or not at the theaters or not but it was beautiful.

I've seen it in 3D in an iMAX theatre, but that doesn't change the fact that the movie is just awful. Are you really saying that a nice 3D CGI scenery is enough for you? Even if it's just a very bad movie like in this case? Aren't your expectations set a big too low? Especialy considering the movie came from the guy who made Aliens and Terminator 2! After the first 10 minutes I knew exactly what would happen further on, what the ending would be, just everything. Maybe I'm just too old-school if I actually demand an original plot and not just flashy CGI from a movie? All I know is that I'll never see it again (I've tried giving it a second chance when it was on the TV but couldn't stand it more than 15 minutes) and I regret paying for the ticket to the cinema, since I had no fun and the 3D effect made my gf sick and almost made her puke ;) I could have bought a nice game for that money :P
