Forums - Gaming - “Skyrim was generic” says Witcher 3 game Director

It's a great game with generic tendencies.

It's characters and quests were definitely generic and unmemorable....

It's combat system lacked any real depth, but still incredibly fun in its simplicity...

It's been awhile, but the story was pretty close to generic ish too iirc....

But besides those flaws, the game is fucking fantastic....

Yes, they should learn from their flaws, but also learn from their strengths....

If they want to look at skyrim as generic, they should definitely not ignore what makes it great at the same time, else they could have a unremarkable game themselves

“Exploring of the world is cool…and for sure we need to learn from them, how to make an open world – how to make the feeling of open world.”

they talk more about it in the video, but they very much are trying to take lessons from what Skyrim did well.

May have been generic, I still had fun with it. Regarding the guards...requiescat in pace

Skyrim was pretty generic and low quality

Story,Characters and Quests were completely boring.
The combat system was worse than the CS of some other games.
The Open world was pretty empty and bland.
Quests and the Open World+graphics got fixed by PC Gamers but everything else is pretty lame at the game.
Bethesda is completely overhyped in terms of Skyrim and didn't go "all out" and didn't do what would be possible in any area of the game.
CD Project is the better developerteam and i think they can do a lot better than Bethesda.

to be honest, they're just taking their characters from the writer, they're not doing anything themselves either, so he shouldn't slam them like that, at least they have original material , not based on a book.

ES world is about as original as the other 5000 magic and swords Books, Games and Movies, we have seen over the years, and since we are talking characters I would rather have good characters based off a book than none at all. Characters and stories are the reason people will revisit these games in the future, When Skyrim's graphics & already broken mechanics have faded and ES6-7 are out no one will have praise for Skyrim any more other than "Well, I played 200 Hours! It must have been good at something then"

I know they're inspired by  J.R.R Tolkien , but at least they're original material, so its an effort, besides the lore is fantastic.

I can see where he is coming from, Skyrim was really lacking in story and characters, it's combat system was pretty bad too.

Witcher 1 and 2 were even worse. Instead of using Skyrim to make his point, he could have just mentioned the previous games in their series. I spent months and months playing Witcher 1 and 2 because they were so fucking boring. I would nod off during the dialogue and the quests were terrible.

Even if Skyrim dropped the ball in story, atleast its actually fun to play.

The only  RPG I feel stands out when it comes story, characters, and dialogue is the Fable series. But that's the main focus of that series.

What disrespect to Skyrim. Even if Bethesda is a lazy developer they still made an amazing game.

Once he makes a better RPG than Skyrim, I'll take him seriously.

Having played better RPGs than Skyrim though, I agree with some of his points. Consequences are not as strong as it should be. Plot wasn't anything special. I'd also like to add that the melee combat is lame and the AI is not so great either. Playing it on the hardest difficulty is absolutely the best way to go.

However, I did enjoy it more than Oblivion. Oblivion bored me to tears.

I understand what he's saying because many people complained about quests being rehashed over and over again and it was like it had no consequence on the world of Skyrim.

However, for the couple months I played Skyrim (I had the PS3 version and got rid of it once the bugs and glitches hit), I found it fairly immersive given it's overall size and scope.

What I will say is that Witcher 3 better deliver, because so far, it's looking to be a Skyrim on steroids. And given these statements, the dev team better deliver. And it will by all means be a day one purchase for me if it looks like it's living up to the hype before release.

Guess he wasn't paying attention if he can't remember 5 characters.

I thought the main quest storyline was pretty generic, the one you can beat in like a couple hours. Thankfully there's hundreds of hours of extra stuff you can run around and do.

The Witcher 2 has some glaring problems. Compared to them, the lack of characterization in Skyrim seems to be a good thing.

Also, i wish i could forget some of the characters in The Witcher 2. That constantly one-line rambling... omfg Skyrim soldiers have nothing on that.
