I have to agree--come talk to me when "active users" is defined as once a month and, even better, once a week, like, I dunno, people that watch cable TV, etc. Defining it as once ever 8-months is patently ridiculous and was clearly arrived at to grossly inflate the numbers.

it's pretty normal to count 8 months as active.. Hotmail/Live mail set your account inactive after 8,5 months.. Google does it at 9 months.. Twitter has a 6 month policy.. Ea has 24 months.. 8 months is fine

Good enough for you? It's a common thing.

Already addressed this - email is not the same.

Compare it to other PAID services  like cable/internet/TiVo/Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu Plus - look at those and how they identify their active users.

Once you stop paying for those services (have no clue about hulu or amazon) they just stop being useable unlike the 3, 6 and 12 month pre purchases of live. You can't compare them either. You could compare them to mobile plans? You could stop paying but you're locked into a contract so that is even different.

I just don't see whats wrong with 8 months. They could have gone a year.

I figured out why they would use 8 months.
8 months from feb, catches everyone that has used live at just under 6 months of the last christmas, which would include users that had a 6 month, or used their 3 free accounts for a month and then bought a three month, etc etc.
Then 6 months after Christmas, we hit summer, where a lot of people go away, so subscriptions might actually be quite low.
Of note, in 2011 we got updates to live membership every 3 months or so, but in 2012 we did not.

Da da daaaaaa

can you link me to the latest ACTIVE PSN user count?  Thanks.

Who said anything about PSN? I thought we were discussing the xbox live numbers and figuring out the state of it. I'm here to analyze the companies in the industry and while, (yes kowen) PSN is much, much, much lower in number, it has virtually nothing to do with my want to get a better read on the live user statistics so vaguely provided.

thanks

Lower? If anything it's higher with more people buying PS3s in recent years than 360s and given that we know there were over 90m PSN users over a year ago. Certainly not "much, much, much lower" at least.

90 million figure represents PSN accounts registered accross all networked Sony products (such as televisions), and not just on PS3 and PSP.

I just wanted to say that many reports have been made about this thread and that all of the moderators that are currently online are eyeballing it.

Why are people reporting it?

That's what I'd like to know. Up to the point where amp pitched in, I can't see anything report worthy at all.

If I had to guess it would probably be this line

"Made me LOL so hard some sony fanboys comments about Live Stats i just stip my coffee TROOLOLOL"

which was cleared out of the op.

Again, Microsoft only Reports ACTIVE USERS (i.e have at least signed once in the last 8 months).

IF THEY WERE GOING TO REPORT MEMBER SINCE 2005 THERE WOULD VE OVER 100 MILION SINCE HALO 3 ALONE WAS CLOSING 25M LAST YEAR ON LEADERBOARDS.

Lol sign in once in 8 months and you're active? How arbitrary is that?

"IF THEY WERE GOING TO REPORT MEMBER SINCE 2005 THERE WOULD VE OVER 100 MILION SINCE HALO 3 ALONE WAS CLOSING 25M LAST YEAR ON LEADERBOARDS."

Tell me how on an install base of 74m are there 100m accounts?

No need bloat numbers here...oh wait, I guess there is...lol once in 8 months. Sounds like facebook.

So when I am on vacation for 2 weeks I am not an active user, even though I pay fees for it. That is like judging a companys performance by checking the cash register.

8 months is fine IMO.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

If ~half are gold members, MS are making some serious money from Gold every year. Congrats to them

Televisions? You sure they have PSN in TVs? This is (or was) not the same as "SEN" btw at the time.

Product registration over the Internet.

I read / heard somewhere that 55 - 60% of all XBL users are gold. So yeah, 1.3 billion USD just with the fees. This is insane.
