Forums - Sony - Will the PS Vita gain the ability to download everything online in the background while gaming & using apps thru a Firmware Update like the 3DS did with Firmware 2.1.0-3U?

Would you want any future firmware updates for Vita to increase Battery Life instead?

Unless both Handhelds were already quite underclock in the first place for battery life.

Their both still underclock, even though they are both clock higher then before.

The 3DS is not underclocked. In fact it's pushing an ancient CPU to its limit.

Well, the E3 2010 3DS 2-core 256 MHz CPU was ancient with a 200 MHz max clocked NIVIDIA Micro GPU.

But the finish product uses a 1 GHz or so 2-core CPU with a PICA200 Micro GPU (max. Clock 400 MHz)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_3DS

We are talking about a 1st Party CPU that was changed from the first 1st Party Nintendo CPU they were earlier planning of using.

Besides with an refresh rate of 180 (60 fps per image) while downloading stuff in the back ground like firmware updates & over 300 MB of 3D videos and doing StreetPass while you are gaming with the calculating of 3D with the extra calculating of being able to adjust the Volume of 3D at anytime on the fly, I would just find your source pretty unreliable with what the 3DS does when we are gaming & watching Netflix (even Netflix has everything downloading in the background from my experience)

If you are wondering about the over 300 MB of 3D videos, well I downloaded the free App: Nintendo Video, which downloads 4 3D videos for free like 3D music videos & Movie trailers and so fort.

Well, for me personally the 3DS' battery life has seemingly only gotten worse over time. I can barely play for an hour or two before the light goes red.

@halil's sig

That's a lot of boycotting.

You must have plugged it in like 600 or so times, LOL.

I am worry about what will happen to my 3DS when the battery starts decaying per say.

I have been cautious with only unplugging my 3DS when I am actually leaving home, and I also make sure to not plug my 3DS back in, unless I am going to keep it in for a good long time.

I personally find myself getting up to 4 hours on the go since the 4.3 update. But it use to be shorter.

Its best if everyone tries to avoid unplugging the Handhelds as often as possible so you won't be constantly re-plugging it back in to speed up the decaying "per say" of the battery.

Yes. ARM, the company responsible for the processor used in the 3DS, the Arm11 MPCore, and the microprocessors used in the majority of electronics on the world market, is quite the unreliable source now isn't it. :)

This guy officially has no idea what he is saying!

I never knew that was even remotely possible? If Nintendo can do it I am sure They will do it for the vita.

Well, the PSP went from its CPU doing 222 MHz to 333 MHz from Firmware updates.

And seeing that the GameCube did 60 fps and the PS3 does 60 fps.

And the WiiMote made Sony create the PS Move

And the Wii U "single player asymetrical gaming" made Sony use the PS Vita as a controller for the PS3 for "single player asymetrical gaming"

And how after Iwata mention how they use to thought of idea of making a seperate 3D display for the GameCube but didn't want to charge people more for the display then the Home Console they cancel the idea (interview from January Or February 2010) to Sony making a seperate 3D display for the PS3 after that statement.

Well, I think it's realistic to see Sony doing this, now that Nintendo has done it, LOL.

You're just making a world of make believe for yourself, putting "LOL" at the end of it doesn't make it anymore true.

The PSP CPU spec was alwasy designed to run at 333mhz, it's a 333mhz CPU. It was artificially limited to 222mhz later allowed to run at 333mhz to get some of the top games near the end of it's life running well at the expense of some battery life.

There's no magic tricks.

Actually, I mostly just play with it plugged into the wall. I heard doing that is bad for battery life though, which sounds the opposite of what you say. Also worth mentioning the 1-2 hours for me is with 3D at max, brightness at max, wifi enabled, volume at max, and power save disabled.

Well, I also play with everything on the Max and get 4 hours on the go.

I know the Instructional Manuel says after 500 charges it starts loosing storage capacity of power in its battery.

Cell phones are a similar situation with 400 charges.

I think as long as you have it in sleep mode during most hours plugged in, it should be okay.

Well it works the same as cell phone charging, so someone should have the answer.

I already said that the Handhelds are underclocked.

Hell it's old news that both the 3DS & PS Vita are underclock in CPU, and max clock in their GPU.

The 3DS has 15.3 million polygons and the PS Vita has 35 million polygons, this is all "1 year old news".

FYI here are the 3DS specs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_3DS

Anyways the reason why the PSP & 3DS & PS Vita are underclock is because of short battery life, which is still short when these handhelds are New.

But yeah, the PS Vita has already gotten 30 more minutes in Vita gaming, and the 3DS already has 1 more hour in 3DS gaming, but the 3DS came out 1 year earlier, so it seems that we just need to have more patience.

I look forward to these 2 Handhelds having further increases in battery life. PLEASE SONY & NINTENDO

didn't even know the 3ds had a update that increase its battery life awesome

It's VERY hard to understand what you're trying to say.

Would we want a firmware update to increase Vita's battery life? Of course. Who wouldn't? That doesn't mean performance can't increase though. You seem to have some sort of idea that they can tinker with the CPU/GPU inside these handhelds when in reality they can't. Games are made to run on a set of specifications and they can't underclock these components without messing up how these games run.

The only way performance can increase is if the system was underclocked to begin with and these companies remove that in some update.

Well, the CPU is underclock on both Handhelds.

I think the most reliable source I heard is that the PS Vita has a 1.2 GHz 4-core CPU and that the 3DS has a 1.8 GHz 2-core CPU, but Wikipedia currently says that they both have 1 GHz CPU (4-core Vita & 2-core 3DS)

And yeah, I know they can increase both with one firmware update, but I want a big swoop like the 4.3.0-10U Firmware. But I was hoping that the 4.5.0-10U firmware update was going to be both battery life & CPU increase, but it only increased the CPU dramatically compare to the other Firmware updates.

You mean it increase the clock speed of the CPU? How would you even know that? There is no way to measure that and I'm sure Sony hasn't announced anything like that for VIta. So where are you getting this info from?

Well, the Nintendo 3DS has this thing called StreetPass that makes it a lot more noticible, plus the eShop allows us to stream 120 refresh rate videos (3D 60 fps per image) and they use to always look pixelated looking by then they got less pixelated and are now starting to look like I'm watching a DVD just about. There's also the shadows of Pokémon models in Pokédex 3D that seems to be getting less pixelated looking. But the StreetPass functionality is the most obvious way to measure the CPU.

I just don't know if they are increasing it by 10 MHz a core or 25 MHz a core or what amount. But I am greatful for the greater StreetPass & 3D streaming videos & so fort functionality.

Vita has "Near". It is pretty much the same thing as Street Pass.

I don't even know what to say to that last half of your comment. Good for you? Enjoy our 3D videos.

Yeah, this is news to me too. I didn't think you could increase the battery life of a system with a firmware update :P. I bought the Nyko 3rd party battery for my 3DS and that really increased the battery life of my 3DS.

Anyway, of course Sony should increase the battery at the expense of the CPU since it already outperforms the 3DS in that area. Battery life is super important for handhelds, look at the original Gameboy it won a console war with its battery life alone lol.

Battery life isn't a big issue nowadays. It just can't be abysmal at the point we can't get a reasonable gameplay session. In this point. both the Vita and the 3DS are fine. It was important back then because these handhelds didn't had rechargeable batteries. Game Gear would use 6 batteries in 4 hours and that would become expensive really quick. Actually, I wouldn't prefer the original Gameboy with 10~12 hours using 4 batteries over a Vita with 4~5 hours just because in the last case I won't need to buy batteries to supply the console.
