Forums - Sony - Will the PS Vita gain the ability to download everything online in the background while gaming & using apps thru a Firmware Update like the 3DS did with Firmware 2.1.0-3U?

Would you want any future firmware updates for Vita to increase Battery Life instead?

Yes, in 1 or so updates. 25 55.56%

No, I just want the PS Vi... 20 44.44%

@OP im sorry to say dude but your wrong on so many levels.
They do it by shortening source code?
3DS has a 1.8Ghz Dual Core CPU? O_O
No just no...

Well, I said Wikipedia says 1 GHz a core for both Handhelds.

I just know that the 3DS has been lasting a lot longer on the go, I get an additional 1 hour of 3D gaming out doors for the same routine since firmware 4.3.0-10U and I don't know how Nintendo did it.

The 3DS consumes less then 60 Hz for all of its functionalities to begin with.

Well I know my 3D gaming on the go has diffintely increased by 1 hour ever since the 4.3.0-10U update.

Didnt hear about this - How is it possible for them to do that :O

Keeping the CPU at the same while increasing the battery power...madness.

Since the days of the Zilog Z80 CPU in the Gameboy, there's always been a CPU opcode made to put the CPU into "sleep", until the next batch of processing is required (usually the next vertical refresh cycle). This sleep mode significantly improves battery life.

My guess is that they've either found a way to make the CPU sleep quicker, or they've altered the firmware to be more efficient (and therefore go into sleep mode a lot earlier). More efficient context switching, perhaps?

I wasn't even aware that an update for the 3ds had extended the battery life by a whole hour. Battery life isn't a big issue for me, I only go on short flights etc.

I was surprise too, but ever since Firmware 4.3 I have gotten an additional 1 hour on the go.

Im usually out for 5 or so hours when I go out, so for me it was awesome that I could start using my 3DS a bunch while the battery took longer to decrease.

But the 4.3 firmware took away the enhance StreetPass from 4.2 as well as took away the frame rate fix for such things as playing the 4th Stage of "Cubic Ninja" with the 3D ON (Circle Pad Mode ON to enable 3D in this game). And then 4.4 brought back the 4.2 functionalities while keeping the 4.3 battery life.

And with Firmware 4.5, I can play Kid Icarus: Uprising for as long as the other 3D games, which use to shorter compare to other 3D ready games. But Kid Icarus uprising never uses SpotPass during gaming to this date :.(

You know the vita battery life has become longer over the last year, the system has become more efficient and faster.

"Improved system stability and convenience"

Well... that could be anything!

I'm talking about user experience instead of what Nintendo reveals.

Before Firmware 4.3, I use to have the battery get drain real fast fully charge, but then I got the newer firmware and all of a sudden I had a noticible longer battery life since. And I asked other owners of the 3DS and they said that they've been noticing the same thing too, but they thought it was just them.

If you play the 3DS with pre-install firmware fully charged and then do an update and play the same exact game again fully recharge, then you will notice a difference in battery life.

I use to hardly use my 3DS outside of StreetPass in Sleep Mode because it use to get drain quick, but now I can waste away and still have enough power to last in Sleep Mode with the Wireless ON 24/7 for StreetPass with enough time to get back home and plug into charger before the Battery runs out to insure that I will never miss out on StreetPassing with people within 98.X feet of me.

Well, it depends on the functionalities, the 3DS has a refresh rate of 180 (60 fps per image) and does stereoscopic 3D while maintaining 60 fps per image with one additional image because of 3D and it allows you to adjust the volume of 3D at anytime on the fly while it downloads firmware updates in the background as well as downloading other stuff in the background like over 300 MB of 3D Videos and doing StreetPass while taking input from touch screen and doing 6 speaker sound thru the earphone jack and Virtual Surround Sound thru Speakerphones while consuming less then 60 Hz of power.

That's kind of silly.  The refresh rate is 60 Hz (psst, Hz is not a unit of power), across three screens, not 180 Hz.  The Vita's single screen has almost twice the number of pixels to render as all three combined.  But basically all you're saying is that there's an OS running behind the scenes, and adjustments to the OS can have an effect on battery life.  This makes sense.

It's useful to keep in mind that a modern processor is not a light bulb: its power consumption depends a lot on what it's doing at any given moment.  Processors have various different execution units that can be switched off when not specifically needed as a power-saving strategy.  My previous laptop even allowed software "undervolting", which is like the converse of overclocking: instead of running the CPU faster at the same voltage, you run the CPU at the same speed but lower voltage.  This reduces power drain with absolutely no slowdown whatsoever.  Of course, lower signal voltage means higher chance of error, so you run the risk of crashing if you push it too far, just like overclocking.

COOL! I've been noticing an additional 1 hour of 3DS gaming.

So how much more longer have Vita gaming start lasting? (before & after experience)

I hate the pre-install Firmare battery life but they are both demmanding because of 8th Gen quality handheld games to process.

Battery life changes makes sense. That goes along with simply improving the operating system. The faster CPU however is hogwash regardless of what you experience.
