Forums - Sony - Will the PS Vita gain the ability to download everything online in the background while gaming & using apps thru a Firmware Update like the 3DS did with Firmware 2.1.0-3U?

Would you want any future firmware updates for Vita to increase Battery Life instead?

Yes, in 1 or so updates. 25 55.56%

No, I just want the PS Vi... 20 44.44%

It's VERY hard to understand what you're trying to say.

Would we want a firmware update to increase Vita's battery life? Of course. Who wouldn't? That doesn't mean performance can't increase though. You seem to have some sort of idea that they can tinker with the CPU/GPU inside these handhelds when in reality they can't. Games are made to run on a set of specifications and they can't underclock these components without messing up how these games run.

The only way performance can increase is if the system was underclocked to begin with and these companies remove that in some update.

Well, the CPU is underclock on both Handhelds.

I think the most reliable source I heard is that the PS Vita has a 1.2 GHz 4-core CPU and that the 3DS has a 1.8 GHz 2-core CPU, but Wikipedia currently says that they both have 1 GHz CPU (4-core Vita & 2-core 3DS)

And yeah, I know they can increase both with one firmware update, but I want a big swoop like the 4.3.0-10U Firmware. But I was hoping that the 4.5.0-10U firmware update was going to be both battery life & CPU increase, but it only increased the CPU dramatically compare to the other Firmware updates.

Didnt hear about this - How is it possible for them to do that :O

Keeping the CPU at the same while increasing the battery power...madness.

The only way that can be done is by efficient programming of games so it doesn't use unnecessary resources.

There isn't any sort of firmware update that can magically increase the battery life by 2 hours. Any sort of batter life increase by a firmware update would be minimal at best.

You mean it increase the clock speed of the CPU? How would you even know that? There is no way to measure that and I'm sure Sony hasn't announced anything like that for VIta. So where are you getting this info from?

Of course I'd like an efficiency update. I'm not sure that would have anything to do with reducing processing power and I doubt that would even be considered at all since the power needs to maintain itself in order to run games the way the devs intended.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

They shorten the source codes. This is something that all electronics that can surf the Web do, from iOS to AOS to computers and the PSP too I believe.

Plus both the 3DS & PS Vita are underclock.

By shortening the Source Codes without having the CPU get clock any higher, well the battery life automatically last longer because they didn't increase the clock speed even though they shorten the source codes.

If only this made any sense.

They could make the UI more efficient and free up some ram but beyond that they can't really change much. A game's AI would not change based off system firmware updates. Are you ok?

Well, it depends on the functionalities, the 3DS has a refresh rate of 180 (60 fps per image) and does stereoscopic 3D while maintaining 60 fps per image with one additional image because of 3D and it allows you to adjust the volume of 3D at anytime on the fly while it downloads firmware updates in the background as well as downloading other stuff in the background like over 300 MB of 3D Videos and doing StreetPass while taking input from touch screen and doing 6 speaker sound thru the earphone jack and Virtual Surround Sound thru Speakerphones while consuming less then 60 Hz of power.

Well, the Nintendo 3DS has this thing called StreetPass that makes it a lot more noticible, plus the eShop allows us to stream 120 refresh rate videos (3D 60 fps per image) and they use to always look pixelated looking by then they got less pixelated and are now starting to look like I'm watching a DVD just about. There's also the shadows of Pokémon models in Pokédex 3D that seems to be getting less pixelated looking. But the StreetPass functionality is the most obvious way to measure the CPU.

I just don't know if they are increasing it by 10 MHz a core or 25 MHz a core or what amount. But I am greatful for the greater StreetPass & 3D streaming videos & so fort functionality.
