Forums - Sony - Will the PS Vita gain the ability to download everything online in the background while gaming & using apps thru a Firmware Update like the 3DS did with Firmware 2.1.0-3U?

Would you want any future firmware updates for Vita to increase Battery Life instead?

Yes, in 1 or so updates. 25 55.56%

No, I just want the PS Vi... 20 44.44%

Total:45

Oh god, more Kaizar statistics.

I don't think firmware updates will have much of an effect on battery life, and I don't think there are many things SONY can underclock to save power.

It's VERY hard to understand what you're trying to say.

Would we want a firmware update to increase Vita's battery life? Of course. Who wouldn't? That doesn't mean performance can't increase though. You seem to have some sort of idea that they can tinker with the CPU/GPU inside these handhelds when in reality they can't. Games are made to run on a set of specifications and they can't underclock these components without messing up how these games run.

The only way performance can increase is if the system was underclocked to begin with and these companies remove that in some update.

Well, the CPU is underclock on both Handhelds.

I think the most reliable source I heard is that the PS Vita has a 1.2 GHz 4-core CPU and that the 3DS has a 1.8 GHz 2-core CPU, but Wikipedia currently says that they both have 1 GHz CPU (4-core Vita & 2-core 3DS)

And yeah, I know they can increase both with one firmware update, but I want a big swoop like the 4.3.0-10U Firmware. But I was hoping that the 4.5.0-10U firmware update was going to be both battery life & CPU increase, but it only increased the CPU dramatically compare to the other Firmware updates.

umm no The 3DS has an Arm 11

dual core CPU and each core is no where near 1.8 GHz. You are trying to put out bogus info yet again, when i already provided to you once again proof!.

FIRST OF ALL

The 3DS cannot have a 1.8 GHz Arm 11!

 ARM 11

 Straight from ARM:

It delivers extreme low power and a range of performance from 350 MHz in small area designs up to 1 GHz in speed-optimized designs in 45 and 65 nm

http://www.arm.com/products/processors/classic/arm11/index.php

As i showed you before

The 3DS Has

ARM11 MPCore 2x 268MHz & 2x VFP Co-Processor

http://www.3dbrew.org/wiki/Hardware

And

Yes battery Life can be increased within limits though

Yeah, this is news to me too. I didn't think you could increase the battery life of a system with a firmware update :P. I bought the Nyko 3rd party battery for my 3DS and that really increased the battery life of my 3DS.

Anyway, of course Sony should increase the battery at the expense of the CPU since it already outperforms the 3DS in that area. Battery life is super important for handhelds, look at the original Gameboy it won a console war with its battery life alone lol.

Battery life isn't a big issue nowadays. It just can't be abysmal at the point we can't get a reasonable gameplay session. In this point. both the Vita and the 3DS are fine. It was important back then because these handhelds didn't had rechargeable batteries. Game Gear would use 6 batteries in 4 hours and that would become expensive really quick. Actually, I wouldn't prefer the original Gameboy with 10~12 hours using 4 batteries over a Vita with 4~5 hours just because in the last case I won't need to buy batteries to supply the console.

If that's true, why do so many people complain about the battery life of the 3DS and Vita? I think people still care about battery life because it limits their gameplay time and if you have to wait a few hours to play again, that becomes an issue for people if they can only play for 4-5 hours before recharge. Also, if your a big traveler like me you need a game system to last as long as possible. Even with ac adapter chargers since the GBA SP its still a big issue with people.

You're just making a world of make believe for yourself, putting "LOL" at the end of it doesn't make it anymore true.

The PSP CPU spec was alwasy designed to run at 333mhz, it's a 333mhz CPU. It was artificially limited to 222mhz later allowed to run at 333mhz to get some of the top games near the end of it's life running well at the expense of some battery life.

There's no magic tricks.

100%  true

the MIPS 4000 dual core chip inside the PSP was rated 333 Mhz, Sony down clocked it to offset battery consumption than as the PSP slim came out they increased the the clock speed back to where it was rated from, also increasing the on board system ram from 32 MB in the PSP 1000 to the 64 MB od system Ram that was in the PSP Slim. the MIPS 4000 GPU still remained 4 MB of dedicated GPU ram though.

You're trying to reason with a guy who dismissed ARM itself as an "unreliable source", while he repeatedly links a Wikipedia article, simply lists off features of the 3DS over and over, and gives totally inaccurate numbers. Plus Hz is not a measurement of power consumption and consoles do not simply "have x million polygons".

Can we close this thread or something?

You mean it increase the clock speed of the CPU? How would you even know that? There is no way to measure that and I'm sure Sony hasn't announced anything like that for VIta. So where are you getting this info from?

Well, the Nintendo 3DS has this thing called StreetPass that makes it a lot more noticible, plus the eShop allows us to stream 120 refresh rate videos (3D 60 fps per image) and they use to always look pixelated looking by then they got less pixelated and are now starting to look like I'm watching a DVD just about. There's also the shadows of Pokémon models in Pokédex 3D that seems to be getting less pixelated looking. But the StreetPass functionality is the most obvious way to measure the CPU.

I just don't know if they are increasing it by 10 MHz a core or 25 MHz a core or what amount. But I am greatful for the greater StreetPass & 3D streaming videos & so fort functionality.

Vita has "Near". It is pretty much the same thing as Street Pass.

I don't even know what to say to that last half of your comment. Good for you? Enjoy our 3D videos.

That's nice to hear about near, but I wasn't bragging.

And I only mention the 3D videos to explain why the 3DS downloads hundreds of MB in videos in the background while downloading firmware updates and other stuff in the background while gaming (also while watching Netflix and using other apps)

If the CPU was 250 MHz or so (but under 300 MHz) 2-core then the battery life would be 12 hours or more, on the pre-install firmware on the 3DS.

And the 3DS can download over 300 MB of video directly within App within around 5 minutes using b/g wireless (every single time in my experience using 15 MB a second Home Wi-Fi)

And the eShop streams 120 refresh rate 3D videos (60 fps per video image) in fine quality.

So explain how with your 3Dbrew.org VS. Wikipedia.org

Heh I didn't notice. I just play until charge is empty and recharge when I have to.

Yes, for me it isn't such a big deal because I usually play more hours at home, when I'm out I just play quick sessions. Anyway, we won't see a improvement bigger than 30% only with software. Best battery life would demand bigger handhelds to fit bigger batteries. Vita is already pretty big and is thicker than other mobile devices (smartphones, tablets), so we will have to wait for more efficient batteries.

we already went over this with you back in feb, me and a few other's you were quite wrong than , and you are quite wrong now:
