Forums - Sony - Will the PS Vita gain the ability to download everything online in the background while gaming & using apps thru a Firmware Update like the 3DS did with Firmware 2.1.0-3U?

Would you want any future firmware updates for Vita to increase Battery Life instead?

Yes, in 1 or so updates. 25 55.56%

No, I just want the PS Vi... 20 44.44%

You know the vita battery life has become longer over the last year, the system has become more efficient and faster.

COOL! I've been noticing an additional 1 hour of 3DS gaming.

So how much more longer have Vita gaming start lasting? (before & after experience)

I hate the pre-install Firmare battery life but they are both demmanding because of 8th Gen quality handheld games to process.

It's hard to say, because I've never done a test my self. But it feels noticeably longer. Not sure if this is from firmware updates or just the battery wearing in. So maybe an hour maybe a little less. But one thing i know for sure, if i left it on for a day and didn't touch it it would be dead, now not so much. The sleep mode works like it should. I charged it before bed last night, and haven't touched it till just 10 mins ago and it still has 100 percent battery.

Unless both Handhelds were already quite underclock in the first place for battery life.

Their both still underclock, even though they are both clock higher then before.

The 3DS has been getting 3-5 hours since launch, same as the Vita.

Alright fun's over.

I'm talking about user experience instead of what Nintendo reveals.

Before Firmware 4.3, I use to have the battery get drain real fast fully charge, but then I got the newer firmware and all of a sudden I had a noticible longer battery life since. And I asked other owners of the 3DS and they said that they've been noticing the same thing too, but they thought it was just them.

If you play the 3DS with pre-install firmware fully charged and then do an update and play the same exact game again fully recharge, then you will notice a difference in battery life.

I use to hardly use my 3DS outside of StreetPass in Sleep Mode because it use to get drain quick, but now I can waste away and still have enough power to last in Sleep Mode with the Wireless ON 24/7 for StreetPass with enough time to get back home and plug into charger before the Battery runs out to insure that I will never miss out on StreetPassing with people within 98.X feet of me.

Battery life changes makes sense. That goes along with simply improving the operating system. The faster CPU however is hogwash regardless of what you experience.

Thanks, I'm really quite clueless about how exactly everything keeps getting better all around.

But didn't the PSP use to be clock at 222 MHz but is now at 333 MHz?

Plus both the 3DS & Vita are underclock for battery life :.(

Well, from my experience the 3DS has been getting longer.

And from "mmmfishtaco" experience the PS Vita has also been getting longer battery life.

Like up to 1 hour more 3DS gaming and a minimum of 30 minutes more PS Vita gaming.

Plus I have this technique where I turn the 3D OFF & Volume all the way down & brightness all the way down & power save mode ON, just right before I put my 3DS in Sleep Mode.

And then when I open my 3DS I turn the Brightness all the way up & power save mode off & volume all the way up & 3D ON and all the way up.

So I notice a longer battery in more better detail because I do this.

Also I always have my 3DS ON with the Wireless ON so I never miss out on StreetPass tagging with someone within 98.5 feet of me.

Well, for me personally the 3DS' battery life has seemingly only gotten worse over time. I can barely play for an hour or two before the light goes red.

@halil's sig

That's a lot of boycotting.

I never knew that was even remotely possible? If Nintendo can do it I am sure They will do it for the vita.

Well, I think it's realistic to see Sony doing this, now that Nintendo has done it, LOL.

Are you trying to say Sony copies Nintendo? Blasphemy!

You're a horrible person.

I doubt it''s gonna happen cuz Vita's a fail bag!!

*Ahem* jokes aside, I expect a lot of firmware features to come to Vita if it's anything like PSP. So, a OS update that increases speed and power doesn't seem to off to me. =p

I make bad threads.

SSB really went downhill after Melee....

The 3DS is not underclocked. In fact it's pushing an ancient CPU to its limit.

Well, it depends on the functionalities, the 3DS has a refresh rate of 180 (60 fps per image) and does stereoscopic 3D while maintaining 60 fps per image with one additional image because of 3D and it allows you to adjust the volume of 3D at anytime on the fly while it downloads firmware updates in the background as well as downloading other stuff in the background like over 300 MB of 3D Videos and doing StreetPass while taking input from touch screen and doing 6 speaker sound thru the earphone jack and Virtual Surround Sound thru Speakerphones while consuming less then 60 Hz of power.

That's kind of silly.  The refresh rate is 60 Hz (psst, Hz is not a unit of power), across three screens, not 180 Hz.  The Vita's single screen has almost twice the number of pixels to render as all three combined.  But basically all you're saying is that there's an OS running behind the scenes, and adjustments to the OS can have an effect on battery life.  This makes sense.

It's useful to keep in mind that a modern processor is not a light bulb: its power consumption depends a lot on what it's doing at any given moment.  Processors have various different execution units that can be switched off when not specifically needed as a power-saving strategy.  My previous laptop even allowed software "undervolting", which is like the converse of overclocking: instead of running the CPU faster at the same voltage, you run the CPU at the same speed but lower voltage.  This reduces power drain with absolutely no slowdown whatsoever.  Of course, lower signal voltage means higher chance of error, so you run the risk of crashing if you push it too far, just like overclocking.

Thanks for helping me understand you guys.

And appearatly PS Vita users have been notching a 30 minutes longer life for gaming. But the 3DS does have a 1 year head start with 1 hour extra.

I just love this awesomeness, I mean it's one thing to increase performence & efficiency and/or whatever, but the Battery Life increase took me by surprise because of how I conserve more battery in sleep mode for all my mobile electronics, so it's more noticible when you do what I do for Sleep Mode:

I turn the 3D & Volume OFF and the brightness all the way down and the power save mode ON before closing my 3DS, but then I turn everything on and all the way up when I open my 3DS to use.
