I hate how every one says the Xbox crowd is different than Sony's crowd.

The original Xbox had the same games (minus gears) the 360 has and the PS2 dominated it everywhere.

I just don't see any way they could "win" the U.S. Does anyone here really believe that they'll spend more in advertising in the U.S. than Microsoft? That they will come out with a new IP that will be more popular than Halo? If they couldn't even do it near the end of this generation when Microsoft was basically saving the bulk of their games for next generation why would they be able to do it with the PS4?

Anyone that thinks the PS4 is going to take the the U.S. is just wishful thinking and hoping for some miracle game or that the strategy that hasn't worked for Sony in the past might suddenly start working now. If anything I think Sony is going to lose more ground in Europe to Microsoft than Microsoft would ever lose to Sony in the U.S.

The reason why is because unlike North America where both the Xbox and Playstation brands are very mature there are some European countries where the Xbox brand has almost no presence and as Microsoft establishes the brand more in those countries their sales in them will increase.

You gots tha be kiddin me right? Halo 4 just came out, another Gears comes out in the next few weeks. So how exactly were they saving their games for next gen?

The reason NA gamers went mostly with 360 was because it was cheaper than the PS3, and then it got Kinect as a 2nd boost. If PS4 and 720 launch at the same price around the same time, the race between them in NA is gonna be much more close. Kinect 2 won't help the 720 as much as Kinect 1 did. It needs to be groundbreaking and not just better tracking for it to have any effect.

Europe is Sony territory, eventhough PS3 came out 1.5 years later costing €200 more than 360 it managed to outsell it.

They have a ton of studios working on games and the majority are obviously for the next Xbox.  Add to that the second party games that have been pushed back and studios that we know are likely working on games for the next Xbox like Remedy, Ruffian, etc.  There has obviously been a major shift in development to the next Xbox, the silence this year so far makes that pretty obvious.

As for the 360 winning North America because it was cheaper, that was probably true in the first half of this generation but the second half shows that it is no longer the case.  I remember when Sony fans said that the 360 would be crushed in North America as the PS3 came down in price, well guess what the exact opposite has happened in North America and the 360 is actually gaining marketshare.

sony won america with the ps2. ms won with the 360. i'd guess as far as brands go both are about equal right now. it will be interesting to see if sony can take some market back. i feel like sony basically gave their market away when they announced at $600. if this gen the price game is closer it will be interesting to see where the market goes.

Personally, I don't care what my friends have; I got a Gamecube when they had PS2s, (bought a PS2 later for Shadow of the Colossus) and I went Wii60 when they had PS3s.

I don't place a lot of value on online gaming communities and the like, I'm a single player/local multiplayer kind of guy. When I play with friends, it's in the same room, on their console or mine.

But I'm also a weird old fart in this world where everyone seems to be addicted to Xbox Live or PSN+, so I have no doubt I'm an obsolete and dying breed... XD

Sony will have to work extremely hard to win America. i actually don't see it happening. I think a lot of people will stick with the 360 no matter what Sony brings to the party next gen. Unfortunately everything in the US is a popularity contest and Microsoft is the absolute best at making everyone believe they are the coolest.

.....

I disagree here at bolded, specially after seeing how they are doing with Windows 8 and Surface tablet. People will buy what is 'cool' to them. So, I would lvoe Sony to have some Halo-like FPS next gen developed by Naughty Dog or Santa Monica.

Those ton of studios haven't made 1 game, we have no idea what they're making or how big the projects are. Gears and Halo are the only Microsoft franchises that sell tons, and both of these come out just as the Nextbox is going to be released. All I can think of that could be significant are Forza and Fable.

The 360 was always cheaper than PS3 in NA, PS3 was actually very close to 360 numbers in NA back in 2009 after PS3 slim came out, but 360 reaffirmed its position with the 360S and Kinect launch.

This time however both will launch the same time with comparable prices, this time PS4 will be up to speed right out of the gate rather than catching up. Neither Halo nor Gears will come out in 2014 except maybe for a Halo 2 Anniversary edition while PS4 might have both GT6 and Uncharted 4.

well like you said that is unusual given COD and Halo numbers (online centric games although Halo less so).  Also PSN+ and live are completely different addictions.  I'm addicted to Plus yet have played SP games from it only.  I mean RE5 (co-op I guess), Darksider, Walking Dead, Infamous 2, etc. all feed my SP wants in between releases.  Not to mention so many people bought PS360 for multiplats this gen that being less expensive helped 360 a lot this gen especially in NA where GT isn't as popular and Uncharted didn't get popular till later in the gen (U2 in 09).  Halo and Gears and being less expensive (as well as early) got 360 a 15m lead in NA.  I don't see Sony botching it even worse than they did this gen.  They have a lead in Europe despite being even LATER than the other territories and being more expensive so their lead there is probably smaller than it will be this coming gen.  It's just logic that if they don't make this MONUMENTAL compilation of errors (more expensive and late should be tombstone for any console) they will do better marketshare wise next gen.
