Isnt the WiiU already selling less per week than the PS3 or 360 ever did?

Launch window numbers -- PS3 -- 1.612M. Xbox 360 -- 1.345M. WiiU -- 2.471M (with probably one more week of January data).

This is for November to January of the launch window, global sales.

Did you know these numbers are not launch for PS3... that's just US and JP... you have to add more 1 million at least for EU PS3 launch.

Yes I discovered this, which is worrying.

"I just wonder what analysts will say if/when the PS4 and/or Xbox 720 do not have gangbuster opening sales."

well they will say ITS NINTENDOS FAULT!! that the PS4720 didnt sell gangbusters!....

watch! they will find a reason to blame nintendo for it! LOL

The MASSIVE difference is the launches of the Xbox360 and Wii and PS3 were supply constrained. For months they were selling out all they could make in the wii's case for years with the other two for months.
With the wii U OTOH after a month its available everywhere so its not supply constrained yet its not selling well.

All bow to me the VGChartz current reigning 3DS prediction champion

Bet with tbone51: Pokeon X & pokemon Y will not sell more than 8 million in 2013

July 2009 daveJ saidTrue the wii has a large lead now but by 2017 the most likely result will be 1. ps3 2. xbox360 3. wii <-- wii's successor launched in 2011 effectively killing sales of the wii

This combined with them missing the forecast pretty much sums up the bad feeling. Plus it's not really possible to use 360 and PS3 launch sales as justification.

360 - Went into the generation with lowest market share, Microsoft (as a games company) was less established

PS3 - Launched side by side with the Wii

The Wii U has had no other competition in this generation yet, and comes from the leader of the previous generation. Those are massive advantages compared to the 360 and PS3. Even so, it is way too early to know how the Wii U will hold up. Maybe when the other consoles have been out for a couple of months we'll be able to judge. As for Nintendo financially, they are obviously on pretty solid ground so that's no worry.

* Calls to put Nintendo on Apple ignore that the company has had a bite taken out of it recently with decreasing market share, profits, and stock price.  it appears to no longer be the dominant player in mobile phones -- except to those who think Nintendo should put their games on them.

Apple's misinterpreted market performance has nothing to do with why Nintendo shouldn't move their games to iOS or any other platform.

Integrated hardware/software development is Nintendo's key advantage. For Nintendo to go third party developer would be like Apple deciding to turn the Mac line into just another Windows PC OEM. Goodbye competitive differentiator and hello commoditization.

The doom is just kind of a way to stick it to Nintendo fans. Whenever something negative about Wii was said the sales were brought in as its defense. Now that it is having slow weeks and the poor guy is bit down. Everyone wants to go in and give it a few jabs.

How will it do long term is hard to say. It is like trying to predict how would PS3/360/Wii would have do by the end of their generation just based on first 3 months of sales.

Where are Apple's decreasing profits? (they are more like flat) They shipped a record number of iphones and ipads this past quarter. And nintendo did nothing to dent it as their sales and profit have been falling for three or four straight years. Its more competition from Android than anything Nintendo has done.

Apple profit down 6 cents per share.  Technically closer to flat, but still down.

You're confusing "profit down 6 cents per share" with "profit per share down 6 cents".  Profits are UP, not down.  It just happens that outstanding shares are up by more (though this is set to change with their stock buyback program).  Read the press release carefully:

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/01/23Apple-Reports-Record-Results.html

It clearly states that Apple's quarter set a new record for profit.  Not by much, but obviously an improvement, especially taking into account that their previous record came from a 14-week period rather than a 13-week period.

If the WiiU outsold the launches of the PS3 and the Xbox 360 -- why is it such a disappointment?  People seem to forget that that both of those systems were outsold by the PS2 during their launch windows.

The WiiU did not reach Wii levels -- but nothing before ever did either.  Unfortunately, Nintendo set high (and unrealistic) goals for sales -- and those are now causing analysts to crow. But they seem to be ignoring all market dymamics.

* Even at a 52-week low, Nintendo's maket cap is almost 85 percent of Sony's.  That means that the maker of ONLY video games is worth as much as a global electronics giant.

* Calls to put Nintendo on Apple ignore that the company has had a bite taken out of it recently with decreasing market share, profits, and stock price.  it appears to no longer be the dominant player in mobile phones -- except to those who think Nintendo should put their games on them.

* The world economy has gone bust. The US economy contracted in the fourth quarter of 2012 (GDP down 0.1%). Uneployment rates in many countries sit around 8 percent or higher. Fuel prices are higher.  In other words, it is not 2006 any more.

I just wonder what analysts will say if/when the PS4 and/or Xbox 720 do not have gangbuster opening sales.
