It is the biggest of a series of terroristic attacks (it started before, mostly unnoticed as most targets were in Africa and was followed by some terror-attacks in europe). 9/11 was used by european countries and the USA to ditch freedom-rights for feels of security and building a surveillance society. Yes, I pretty much think it will be covered in future history books over the world.

So really, Hitler and Bin Laden don't hold a candle next to those two. Gengis Khan was also pretty brutal. He reduced the population of Persia from ten to one million during his campaign, apparently.
