Expectations.
Nintendo expects to ship 5.5m units by March 31st and 24m software.
Current numbers (sold to customer): 2.4m HW, 4.9m SW
11 weeks to go.
Using this week's numbers as an average for the next weeks -> 3m HW and 6.1m SW by March 31st.
Rayman Legends, Lego City Undercover and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (US & European version) better be huge.

Not when using the weekly/yearly charts (which I think most of us here do)
I could be wrong but I think a large portion of the Wii U "doom" (for lack of a better term) is retaliation for critical comments about the PS-Vita's sales ...

I look at it this way: The 360 was at about 8m globally at the end of 2006 after its second holiday. Vita numbers won't have reached 5m by the end of March, which will mark it's one year anniversary of release globally. That's only one global holiday for Vita but it's two holidays in Japan, which is the strongest market for portables. Therefore, if WiiU is only at around 6m on January 1st, 2014 it will be somewhere between those Vita and 360 numbers. This won't bode well for WiiU at all. However, unless Nintendo completely screws up this year/holiday and instead delivers, most importantly, some big holiday games combined with a price drop (for the sake of affordability and to counter the new consoles), I believe we'll see a repeat of what happened with the 3DS. My guess is that we'll see WiiU bounce back very nicely and amass around a 15m install base by this time next year. I just hope they play their cards right. |
I see the potantial for Wii U to get 10-15m units sold by this time next year, but as it's looking now it'll probably sell less than 10m. They're being too secretive imo. They can't wait for e3 to announce all their games for the rest of the year because the PS720 will steal a great deal of the attention and Wii U will struggle to get a spot in the light...
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
I think they're at 1/3 to 1/5th the amount I expected this month, but launch month sales were good in te US and Japan, below expectation in Europe.
I really think Nintendo needs to act and announce something huge for the fall, and some interesting hold-off games for the next 6 months.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
Mostly yes. But the January numbers thus far a bit disconcerting.
I don't think it will meet Nintendo's goals through March31. I'm thinking Nintendo will have to reduce its estimates during its quarterly briefings.

The way things are looking now, I agree. But keep in mind that the 3DS sold poorly after its launch for several months until its price drop, then with a couple of big games for the fall it was pretty much back on track. Nintendo doesn't need to worry so much about Microsoft and Sony's launches being strong; they won't be able to affect the fanfare they will receive. What they need to focus on is making WiiU look like a must have item despite the competition, with great games and a good price.
No doubt Nintendo will absolutely need to bring its "A" game this year as it's of critical importance, but I'm sure they know how bad the sales are this last week. It can still be turned around; it just remains to be seen if they have prepared to do that.
