They're not nearly as bad as they look, really. If you look at Europe's launches from last gen, you'll see that they typically drop off strongly after the first week, meaning the Wii U is actually holding a bit better. More importantly, the Wii U is ahead of the 360 at its launch, and if you look at "first holiday" sales, the Wii U actually does have the chance to perform quite closely to the Wii, if it has a strong last few days leading up to Christmas, which is relatively likely at the moment. To the 23rd of December 2006, the Wii had sold a little under 600,000 units in Europe. The Wii U is currently at around 340,000. The 360 was at about 400,000 to 24th of December 2005. This suggests that the Wii U will be somewhere between the 360 and the Wii in terms of first-holiday sales. I can't compare with PS3, as it launched in March 2007, and thus had plenty of time on shelves prior to the holiday season. Don't forget that Europeans don't have an equivalent to Black Friday prior to Christmas. Mind you, they could certainly be better. But they're not nearly as bad as they look. |
I'd say the Wii U sales in EU is very bleak... 60k in it's third week?? That's no where good.
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
There is really a lot of goalpost moving going on again. If it suits the agrument suddenly only isolated regions count, or the PSV was never part of the conversation, only surpassing the Wii equals "not doomed". And I'm sure if it surpassed the Wii it would have been "bu-bu-but only surpassing PS2 means not doomed".
There is always a new excuse to be had, but the bottom line is, "better than Vita".
Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.
love wht i'm seeing. all great across the borad. love seeing UC3
How can people claim that less than 70k in all of Europe in the middle of the holiday season is good? The Wii U is not doing very well, let's stop pretending it is. Over 300k behind the closest competitor and less than 100k above the Wii is not fantastic by any measure and the 5.5 million Nintendo forecast for March 2013 is looking extremely unlikely.
It sold 2k more than the Vita in Europe for chrissake. And don't blame it on shortages, first off; there really aren't significant shortages and second, Nintendo would never be dumb enough to ship such a tiny amount of consoles to an entire continent one to-two weeks before christmas, no company in the world is that daft.

This means nothing until there is a significant dropoff in Wii U sales after the Holidays end. If Nintendo couldn't meet demand for Wii, as Reggie would say, "That's Wii's problem, not Wii U's problem."
All this means to me is that Nintendo really has done a better job of keeping up with demand this time around, at least in the US. Suggesting the Wii U has to meet some kind of hypothetical bar of "could have" Wii sales in order to be selling well is ridiculous.
WiiU sales:
US: great
Japan: good
Europe: bad
It's really that simple.
It appears that only the Japanese know the difference between:
3DS & DS
and
Wii U & Wii

They have Nintendology in school. It's part of the curriculum.
