I don't think this is really it. People still care about hardware specs, it's just that the others offer reasonable specs at a more competitive price.
Great read Kowen, I had no idea. I always liked Panasonic as a company, so this is upsetting.

In both cases not really their console. Nintendo's GameCube, while 3DO was its own company. They just did manufacturing in both cases
