Forums - Nintendo - I've discovered that Pokemon is a Hardcore Game, therefore Pokemon Haters must be Casual Gamers (and a few Mid-core).

The wikipedia definiton is faulty lol I mean competition is in no way related to hardcore games. So is Gran Turismo 5 proloque or any other game that in at least 1 region lost its online features. or singleplayer games like skyrim that dont have competitive gameplay at all no hardcore?

So called "hardcore" gamers have no idea what they are nor what hardcore means.

20 Years ago 2D mario was hardcore today its not? BS

TBH wikipedia is full of retards. If they wrote some good wikipedia articles and then do shit on another they can easily block it from further corrections. So their shit stays there forever unless a person with "similar or higher rank" cares and removes the block or corrects the article.

The idea of wikipedia is good the execution is not.

And in my opinion hardcore or casual dont even exist. Its all about easily accessible games and non accessible games. I mean if I want I can play mario 64 (single player game) complete it and then ask my friend to beat my time. So everything can be competitive it does not matter if there is a gamemode for it inside the game.

And just because I can find people online that are better than me doesnt make the game challenging it makes the opponent a challenge not the game itself. So theoretically Call of Duty with its way to easy singleplayer campaign is more "casual" than Mario Galaxy because you die more in Mario than you do in CoD. I can also play Wii Sports or Kinect Adventures competitive and depending on the opponent its hard or its not.

As said before its about accessible and non-accessible. people should finally drop this hardcore/casual kindergarten crap.

That definition is nonsense.
Any game rated above T/12 is hardcore and any game rated below is casual (i.e. for kiddies and soccer moms). Games rated T/12 vary in hardcoreness. With some evident exceptions, this definition always works. Pokemon is not one of these exceptions; it is evidently for kiddies.

Should I trust a forum user instead of the Wikipedia then? Notice that by your definition Civilization, Gran Turismo and Minecraft (for example) are for soccer moms.

Let's look into the opposite direction. Name five M-rated games that are casual.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Halo 3

I just took these from the best-sellers list. There are only so many dedicated video game enthusiasts out there. The vast majority of people who purchased these games are only marginally interested in video games.

By the way, I think there are no such things as casual and hardcore games. Someone can play Angry Birds for 8 hours every day, and someone can play Halo 3 on multiplayer an hour every week with a couple of friends.

Singstar and Ico off the top of my head. There are many more for sure.

Edit - Kinect Star Wars is an even better answer.

Yeah... no. I don't think you will find people agreeing with your list.

But anyway, the terminology of hardcore and casual is of course stupid. The only reason why people started to divide things in two camps is because first the DS was beating the PSP and then the Wii was beating the HD consoles. People could either accept that Nintendo was winning or they could go the route of breaking it down into different markets (with hilariously arbitary definitions), so Nintendo sales were acknowledged, but they were not really beating Sony and Microsoft. Others went the route of not being willing to categorize the Wii as seventh generation console, but that has died down ever since the Wii started to get outsold by the HD consoles on a regular basis.

I am confident in saying that had Nintendo lost the crown in the handheld market with the DS and had the Wii gone the way of the GameCube, then the market would have never been broken down into hardcore and casual games. After all, nobody ever seemed to be offended by the sales of Singstar and Guitar Hero on the PS2, as well as the countless licensed kids games like Spongebob Squarepants.

What's wrong with my list?

I guess people would disagree if they think a "hardcore" game is a game with sex, gore, and adult content. But I don't buy that. We have a ESRB rating system to tell us what is meant for adults and what is meant for all audiences.

Why do we, as video game fans, need to separate games into "hardcore" and "casual"? I've never heard someone call The Godfather or Schindler's List hardcore, or Singin' in the Rain casual. It just doesn't make much sense. And it's not productive at all.

I love this post.

You ever gave a ‘casual’ gamer a Nintendo game to play and see how they get on? For example, I bet not many ‘casual’ gamers can beat a Zelda game, and certainly can’t beat a Metroid Prime game.

I bought NSMB for my wife and it’s been well over a year and she still hasn’t beaten it (something about her keep running out of lives lol).

Nintendo games while they appeal to the widest range of gamers, including hardcore and casuals, the games themselves IMO are certainly not casual games.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

Put a soccer mom who plays wii fit to play any of those titles and watch how she does. Then give her angry birds and she will be just fine.

For me personally, casual game = made for retards.

That strikes me as a somewhat unsympathetic and offensive definition.

Why don't we just split games into good games and bad games? Isn't that more of a productive dichotomy?

Because gamers don't want to accept that good games =/= games they like.

It CAN be hardcore, but I remember being 11 years old when Pokemon red and blue came out when pokemon took off.

You cant say a game is truly core when pre teens are the main players.

It's the Pokemon effect:

It's so true though. Pokemon was huge while I was in elementary school. One of the coolest kids in the school invited me over just so he could have someone to play Pokemon Stadium with.

Then high school was a dark time, where you had to play in secret because it was a "kid's game".

And then college rolls around... and everyone (everyone!) has a DS with Pokemon. My room-mate and I would spend (waste) hours upon hours training, breeding, and testing our teams. It was a magical time.

Your logic doesn't follow.  A hardcore gamer can easily hate another genre which has its own hardcore players.  For example, MMOs like WoW have tons of hardcore gamers, though MMOs are often hated by hardcore gamers who play FPS titles.

I agree.  I know a woman in her 40s who does nothing but play point-and-click puzzle games on PC.  From what I understand, she plays several hours a day.  That's pretty hardcore.  Relative to the rest of society, hardcore is a term that's assigned to a person's level of interest and dedication in an activity, not the level of the activity itself.  A hardcore sports fan, for instance, or a hardcore film buff.  These are people who deeply entwine themselves with their hobby.

Also, "mid-core" is a goofy, made-up sounding term.  I doubt anyone uses it.  I know for a fact Microsoft uses "core" as an official term relative to gaming.  Core gamers are just that, they're the core fan type that plays traditional console and PC titles as part of their "menu".  They typically play many different games in a year, usually across genres, and are often knowledgeable and involved with the culture of their hobby.  Of course, Microsoft breaks it down with demographics, but that's still highly variable.

Casual is just what it sounds like, it's people who aren't really invested in gaming as a hobby.  The term is also used to define the market which caters to this group.
