Hum? I do care. Profits are way more interesting than the userbase to me.

That's your issue. Both Sony and Nintendo start off with a handicap that is thet strong yen, profits don't tell the whole story. Userbase is everything.

And MS starts off with a handicap that is that Japanese hate American products.
I think it is really stupid to call someone a winner because of market share. Sony lost 6-7 billion USD with the PS3 and they MIGHT catch up to 2nd place, while MS made good profits with the Xbox 360. (EDD doesn't tell the whole story - Zune, Kin, Windows phone, Nokia, R&D fpr Xbox 3 all happened during this generation and it is about breaking even)

For the money Sony lost, MS would have been able to bundle more than 20 million consoles with every happy meal sold at MC Donalds. (6 billion / 299). And don't get me started with the Wii. That is why the winner (Wii) second place (Xbox 360) and 3rd place (PS3) are not a subject to change. For me and probably for everyone with common sense. Not for users on N4G and partially on VGC though.

And of course the profits are more important for the future of the brand. If Sony loses another 6 billion USD with the PS4 over the next 6 years, I doubt there will be a PS5. Even if they have a 50% market share.

Bold: When will this misconception stop?

Lol, now the goal posts will be moved once PS3 is about to overtake 360.

Congratz 360, this is definitely a great feat. When you look back at what people predicted with sales towards the beginning of the gen, it just reminds you to never underestimate your competition.

Have we reached the year when the Wii and the X360 would have negative sales?

One fool quoting another...

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

So, i was reading the comments of these articles recycling the 70m news and this is what came to me

Isn't the more important question how many active consoles of each company there are today ?

I mean the 360 was being manufactured for 3 whole years with a reported fail rate of over 50%, people's comments were about how many 360 consoles each of them had bought !

At the end of the day it's all about how many consoles are alive and kicking at this moment.

My point exactly. The first couple of revisions (pre-Jasper) had a 50-100% failure rate. The extended warranty did eventually end, and if your 360 died after that, you had to buy another one. I myself bought two Xbox 360s. However, this only increased the install base by one (because I don't buy two copies of the same game). I personally know several people who have purchased multiple 360s (some before the extended warranty, some ofther it ended). I bet that even in this thread right here there are several members who have bought more than one 360. Since the number of failed PS3s is without doubt smaller than that of 360, I am convinced that at this time the total install base of PS3 is ahead of 360. I'd wager any amount of money on this.

True for me. My brother got a 360 and I got a 360 for 50$ (with 10 games and controller). Both were out of warranty when they both broke on the same day (not even RROD). So thats 4 360s for MS. I also had a PS3 that broke (not YLOD) but it was in warranty and I got a free one within 2 weeks. So thats 1 PS3 for Sony.

Already the third time I answer that question this month.

MS extended the warranty to 3 years. If they couldn't repair your 360 anymore during that time you got a free replacement model -> a more reliable one.
MS doesn't count replacement models in their shipment data.

Thank you! I have often wondered about this.  I wondered if I need to adjust the numbers when looking at other consoles sales.

So is it safe to assume then, that Microsoft manufactured a million or more that 70 million for replacements?  Say probably a million or more for warranty replacements, and another batch for gifts.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

MS was asked about these replacement models after releasing quaterly financials back in 2008 I think, and they specifically said that they only count consoles that were bought by retailers and not given away for free.
Probably quite a bit more than 71 million 360s that have seen the light of day, given the high losses.
