Forums - Movies & TV - Dark Knight Rises' Cinematographer Calls Avengers "Appalling"

The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers were two of the best Super Hero/Big action movies in a long time. Just compare them to the competition and you'll realize how good they are. If you compare any big action movie to your imagination it will always be a bad movie.

there is one scene that particularly bothers me most about The Dark Knight Rises.

When the Policemen go into the sewers you can clearly see many of then wear riot gear, helmets, body armor, and assault rifles.

but after they are being freed, they obviously go home, change into their sunday uniform, pick up their handguns and walk in a straight line towards a armed enemy army behind covers,

i know what the scene tried to do visually and atmospherically, but in context it was just unbelievable silly.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

The Dark Knight is considerably better than either TDKR or Avengers.

I wouldn't call it appalling but I kinda agree.

Avengers was visually so impressive that it did have that craziness and over the top sensation comic books offer more than any other super hero movie but apart from that the movie was flat due to the fact that there was no real conflict, no real drama, no real tension what-so-ever. It was more of a shameless fanservice extravaganza.

I mean at no point was anything in the movie at peril. It was like having half a dozen of supermen who never even for a second knelled down or missed or lost power. They didn't avenge anything, it was a matter of when they would show up. Kinda boring really.

We have one of the better villains of all time coming up.

Loki was just...pointless. At no point was he menacing or really achieved anything.

The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America all actually struggled in their respective movies. In Avengers... it was a walk in the park

I'm not talking about Loki.  I'm talking about the real villain of the Avengers films.

And I'm almost certain Loki intended to lose and that things worked out exactly as planned.  The invaders never were supposed to win.  The film even makes a point of reminding us that Loki never, ever cared about being ruler of earth.  From the looks of things, we might be headed into Infinity Gauntlet territory.

Man, I hope not.  An Infinity Gauntlet story would be impossible to film.  I hope they do some sort of Dark Avengers story with Red Hulk, Iron Patriot, Bullseye, etc.  I would mention the Skrulls but I don't want another heroes vs. aliens battle in the middle of the city.

Still, we know Thanos is in the second film and the closing line in the first film refers to Mistress Death almost certainly.  The cosmic cube is in Asgard and so is the Infinity Gauntlet (and Loki).  Even if it doesn't reach the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, it's almost certainly going to be about Thanos going after the cosmic cube.

Skrulls, from what I undersand, are owned by another production company.  Even though the first aliens were filler, I doubt they'll do another alien invasion.

With Thanos being there, I can't help but wonder if they're going to cut out all the characters that came with his storylines.  Captain Marvel, Drax, Moondragon, Adam Warlock, Starfox and the Eternals--you're right, it does seem kind of impossible.

I trust Whedon enough to pull it off.  I mean, I don't think anyone but him would have been able to pull off this Avengers movie.

I went to watch The Avengers with 5 friends, all of us came out of the cinema disappointed. Especially me because I'm not a fan of comic book style films, even if I was I still wouldn't have enjoyed it.

pokoko i noticed you were not talking about loki, I'm saying that this film failed to produce any kind of thrilling sensation, dramatic build up or anything at all. a bunch of supermen kicked the bad guy's ass without breaking a sweet... what on earth did they avenge ?

This one is building up for the next ones. If the Avengers were physically out matched in this movie, what would there be to look forward to in the next one? LoKi was mentally trying to manipulate the Avengers, and at some point they were fighting eachother and not on the same page which means Loki almost won. However they over came that and defeated the invaders. Now that they know they can work together they will most likely face a much stronger foe. That's why at the end they teased a more powerful foe.

But this movie was also more about the build up of finally getting to see all these guys together and kicking ass. If you were a fan of super hero movies, then you would have sat through Iron Man, Hulk, Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor. That's 5 movies of anticipation and build up to watch these guys kick some ass. People love watching their favorite characters kick ass, and that's what a big part of this movie was.

This isn't a one-off movie, it's going to be a franchise of atleast 3 movies, and has to be viewed as such to really grade it. The story arch needs to stretch beyond one film.
