This allows for a better looking character while playing, instead of a model with a lower polygon count.
Optimization at it's finest.
That was a wicked trick, I would've never noticed! XD

I second this. Or maybe one on the Wii U.
I never once thought that it would be a 3D character. If there is no reason to make it 3D, why go through the extra trouble. Fixed view, fixed frame rate, fixed resolution, fixed lighting, 2D always looks better.
I don't understand whats happening in the picture. It looks like he's being smashed or something.
Either way I'm still reluctant to believe its a 2D model. But I'd be impressed if we can confirm it really is.

I'm quite surprised. Retro pulled a "Rare" on us and utilized similar software that Rareware used for DKC to give the illusion of 3D characters. No wonder they said that the game was using three times the texture and polygons than in Metroid Prime 3. By doing this, the Wii isn't wasting power to fully render the character. Thus making the game look better graphically for other things in the game.
