With the new ‘super-slim’ PS3 out today in the US, no one was really sure how the market would react considering the console actually costs more than the regular slim, but adds in more value. Now it looks like the new product has sold out on Amazon… but that might just be because there wasn’t enough stock.

If you head on over to the Amazon page, you’ll notice that the super-slim is already out of stock, something that you’d think would mean that it’s been selling like crazy. But, instead, the console is only number 42 on the top 100 selling video games – below the 30 of the regular slim. It also failed to break into the top 10 of the movers and shakers. For comparison’s sake, the Xbox 250GB is currently at no.32, the 4GB Kinect version is at 36 and the 4GB standalone is at 40.

Why the world’s largest digital retailer has so few new PS3s for sale on launch day is rather odd, and it does make you wonder if Sony released the super-slim before they could build up sufficient stock, just so they could get it out before the holiday season.

Elsewhere, the PS3 is available at GameStop and Sony Stores – but is listed for pre-order at BestBuy, and isn’t even listed on WalMart, Toys R Us, Target, Sears, KMart or Fry’s – all of which are places Sony links to on the PS Blog as “where to buy“.

That has to be the dumbest statement in the history of everything.

Sony has barely shipped anything. Most off our ztores havent even started selling them yet cause stock hasnt come in. Expect a small boost. Nothing major at all

what ztores? Where do you work..

Looks like retailers only got very small shipments of these new super slim PS3s.
Maybe a marketing strategy by Sony to build hype?
There are still many many old Slim PS3s in stock across all these retailers.

well it was kinda obvious the sales wouldn't be huge like the first PS3 "revision" as this was announced less than a week ago with zero advertising. Sony probably wants their current model to phase out before shipping larger quantities of the new PS3 slim. I expect some major PS3 deals to phase out the current PS3 slim

Sony should pull the Nintendo card right now.
So. Hard.

"Pre-orders sold out!"
*Everyone jumps of joy*
"PS3 super slim will be the biggest launch ever!"

Over a bundle that's still available (not sold-out) at GameStop?

Excellent contribution, your wisdom knows no bounds.

The question is did Amazon receive any of these or not?

ok just wanted to say something but ethomaz already did, it was not even in the top 20 (he said 40) the last days so amazon has to have a fail system with wrong rankings or they didn't have many.

Except that Sony has specifically said that they will not be lowering the price on the older models.  If retailers do, that is one thing, but Sony is not discounting any of the current products.
