Forums - Sales Discussion - Prediction: Wii U will sell under 40 million units

when the successors to 360 and ps3 eventually arrive, I'm fairly certain they'll have much higher pricetags (if previous generations are anything to go by)
i think the typical, unbiased, consumer will more likely pick the cheapest option over grunt power...we're living in times where the 'best' graphics aren't necessarily what the people want (outside of the so-called, self proclaimed hard ass hardcore)...

Basically "normal unbiased" people won't see any game on the wiiU that looks definitely better of what they already have seen on the other systems. Systems with lower price tag, bigger library and better online support. So why should they buy it?

Beside "self proclaimed hard ass hardcore" gaming is very important in the home console segment. It's numerically on par with the casual segment and it has a more predictable behaviour (meaning you can trust those consumers, they will buy your new system if they liked the old one).

well...they've been know to jump ship pretty eagerly actually. How many ps 2 fans were underwelmed with the original ps3 pricetag and decided to go with the cheaper and just as good 360 at the time?

I'm not 'pro wii u' btw...I just think it will be a success,  which I realise makes me a freak on these boards ;)

I think it's far more likely that the PS4/720 won't sell 40mil, at least one of them...

Times change, you know. As others have said, anything with a pricetag of over $500/£350 is just asking to fail in this climate. It's just too much, even less is risky (as the 3DS/Vita scenario has shown us).

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

LOL. oh please.

The hardcore are a tiny segment of the console market. The casual is much larger than it is.

They jumped on another system with VERY similar characteristics, VERY similar game library and lower price. As for the next MS/SONY console, you can take the "similar" part out of the equation.

Hardcore gamers (which are more than half of PS360 owners going by the software sales) will surely dig in the next hardware iteration. And if they can't afford it, they will wait and keep using what they own now, because from their point of view wiiU has nothing new to offer. You can spin it however you want, but it's a fact. Most of the games on wiiU will also be on the XBOX 360 and PS3.

Casual gamers are different. They go and buy an iphone or a new bag or whatever is hot that moment or whatever they feel like. It's compulsive, not predictable, not reliable.

Well if the consumers allways buy the cheapest consoel ect than why is Apple so succesfull with his over expensive i Phones? Price will have an impact for sure but not for all. There are many people willing to buy a console that cost 200 Dollars more.

As you can see with the pS3. It was always the expensivst console of the market and yet it is the best selling home console yearly for the last three years. Thats also an fact.

I don't know why people keep comparing Apple products and consoles as if they are the same thing. Guess what, they're not.

If you want something to gauge the advantage lower priced system have vs more expensive competitors, use console history, not Apple sales figures.

Consoles don't hold the same market value as smartphones and tablets.

While I could be wrong, I'm expecting the Wii U to pass 40 Million units sold around December 31st 2014.

In my opinion the plausable lifetime sales performance of the Wii U is between 60 million and 150 million systems sold, with it being more likely that it will sell between 80 million and 120 million. Predicting less than 60 million isn't really a reasonable estimate.

That's not a fact...

A fact is something that is true. That's a true statement, so it is a fact.
