I agree and it doesnt have to be a Smash clone. Square has their FF mashup its a fighter but doesnt play any thing else like the others with the possible exception of DBZ TB series.

If you really think about who MS could use, they have a pretty good list of characters.

-Master chief and several other characters from the Halo universe
-Marcus Fenix and the same goes with Gears
-Agent from Crackdown
-Bonjo and Kazooie along with a ton of other Rare characters
-Blinx from last gen
-Mr&Mrs. Splosion Man
-Gunstringer
-Alan Wake
-Fable Heroe
-Voodoo Vince
-Brute Force characters
-Blue Dragon
-Lost Odyssey

Then several 3rd party characters like Shepard, Ryu,Ezio, etc. could join the mix. In the end though I don't think I would want one.
