Forums - Sony - Let's find out whether PSASBR is a rip-off or not.

That's because I don't really think PAS does that much to separate itself.  They add another attack button (which seems to take place of the Smash attacks in Smash), changed the way you built specials, and made it so that only final smashes (Dunno what they're called in this game) can KO you.  Other than that, I don't see that much of a difference.

but that can make the game unique; what's MK most known for? it's grusome fatalities, what's SF know for? it super over the top super/ultra combos(don't get me wrong...the fandom of the characters plays a huge part in their history) if you take that away what would you have?

why discredit what can make the game stand out, besides like I said before, Sony/Superbot confirmed that their will be more than just the SSB like mode(I remember hearing there was some sort of capture the flag mode...rumor)

First off, I wouldn't say SF is known for over the top Super combos.  Ultra Combos aren't really THAT big of a deal in Street Fighter.  They're a valuable tool in SFIV, but they're not the focus of the game, like they are in Marvel.  Super moves in particular are almost a non factor in SFIV because EX attacks are generally more valuable.

Back on topic.  I'm not really trying to discredit that difference.  It is indeed a major difference that will change how people play, particularly at higher levels (if PSA really generates a competitive community).

I feel like we're going in circles a little bit, but fatalities are just one of many elements that differentiates MK from SF.  If you took fatalities out of the equation, you'd still have very different games.  Some of those relate to the audiovisual package, and some of those revolve around the physics, mechnics, and controls.

In contrast, if gave PAS percentages and ring outs, you'd have a game that looks, plays, and feels, nearly identically.

It's obviously heavily inspired by SSB.

Its a ripoff the same way CoD and BF is a ripoff from the first shooter: wolfenstein.

Dont matter though, since All Stars plays so much better than Brawl in the beta.

You're taking a big leap there. I wouldn't say CoD and Battlefield are clones of Wolfenstien. But through constant one-upmanship developers have clearly borrowed ideas from each other. For example Duke 3D was inspired by Doom. Medal of Honor was inspired by Goldeneye 64. Call of Duty was insprired by Medal of Honor. Etc, etc...

However, Playstation All Stars is not borrowing some ideas. Its flat out ripoff of Smash Bros with some tweaks.

Frankly most of us just don't approve of ripping off your competition and this reeks of just that.

Well for starters, the game is like Nintendos in that it involves all mascots (and even some3rd party ones) owned by the corporation and put into one game. That in itself isnt a ripoff but that its a 2D fighting game featuring a similar aesthetic and physics. Also, since many feel a ripoff is inferior to the original, its worth noting that Sonys mascots have nothing on Nintendos, which in itself is gonna cost this game in review points.

But its the differences are so small that not only do little to set it apart but actually wont make the game as fun. No knock backs, not knowing points until the end of the game, and the only way to make a point is to just "grind" your way until you got the energy.

As with all ripoffs, it wont be as successful. The preorders are allready showing it. I am amazed at the polar opposite of internet PS3 fans and real world PS3 fans.

The problem isn't that it is an imitation. The problem is that the denial of imitation.

The Devs admit freely they were inspired by smash brothers, what more do you want from them, a public hanging?

Did it not take the developers a while to admit that they were influenced by SSBB. If I recall correctly, they went out of their way at first to downplay (deny) any SSBB connections.

That benig said, it is not the first game and won't be the last to take this approach.  it will rise and fall on its own.

For example, I found TMNJ: Smash Up a fun and unique take while I found Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion XL to have poor physics and poor characters and not worth my time. (Ironically, Cartoon Network  probably has more depth.)  --Note both games were played on the Wii and acquired in part to see how they measured up to SSBB (thankfully -- Gamestop takes back used games within 7 days and Cartoon Network was returned).

My main gripe with all of this is that everyone pretends that Smash is the only game within its genre or more accurately is the inventor of said genre...we can all agree it's likely the best but it doesn't mean it should be considered the only one deserving to exist.

Sony and its fans get accused of arrogance but this to me is just as bad.

Nintendo did not invent fighting games. Nor did it invent four player fighters. But I cannot think of another fan service fighter before SSB.

Yes, they first had the bright idea of using mascots but doesn't mean should be crowned as kings of the world.

No... no they didn't...

I only remember the You Tube tags acknowledging SSBB.  The press releases, if my memory is correct, skirted around the subject.

Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion

That one had a lot of potentials but it was not done by capable devs.

If only the physics worked. And a roster of characters that ave been on TV sometime in the last few years would not have hurt either.

The tags is not something they had direct control over.

What exactly did you want them to say?

"Hey look everybody, we're stealing a game that someone else already made and we're calling it our own lulz!!" When was the last time you saw anyone do that?
