The Last Of Us doesn't look anything like a survival horror game to me. I haven't seen anything that stops me from thinking it's just an Uncharted clone in terms of gameplay. We haven't had a proper survival horror game in donkeys years. Resident Evils 4, 5 and 6, Dead Space 1, 2 and especially 3, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 and Dead Rising 1 and 2 are more action games than survival horror games. The Dead Space franchise would be the closest we've seen, but even so that's still more action horror than survival horror. Too much ammo, not enough (if any!) scares. Co-op play does not belong to a survival horror game at all. The whole point of a survival horror game is to put you, alone, against seemingly insurmountable odds with limited resources. All of those games above give you too much ammo, and The Last Of Us will do the same. |
you mean "I haven't played a proper survival horror game.." right? because there definitely were proper additions to the genre like Siren: Blood Curse and Amnesia: The Dark Decent
I agree that The Last of Us (while having survival elements) might not go too deep into that, because (as EA said about Dead Space) true horror games don't do too well commercially and you can garner more sales by going with a more action heavy and less scary approach.

I think Uncharted will be Survival... Death? Zombies are supposed to appear, right?
Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Siren Blood Curse was released 4 years ago and Amnesia was PC/MacOS/Linux only. That makes only 1 out of 11 a proper survival horror game, 2 out of 12 if you include Silent Hill Shattered Memories, but that isn't really a typical survival-horror experience due to not having a weapon. Cursed Mountain was pretty good, plenty of scares, great atmosphere but there was still plenty of emphasis on action.
Exactly when did having zombies turn a game into survival horror? Horror existed long before Zombies and so did survival.
Survival horror is a genre built around the idea of surviving a dangerous event with limited resources and capabilities.
This game is seriously going to be good. Its on my def buy list.
I think resident evil would work well on Wii U. Maybe even something like Dead Space. It would be cool to have to shake the Gamepad to get a necromorph off of you.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash
The closest thing to traditional survival horror was RE: Revelations.
But the fact that the tablet can be used while things go on the screen is useful.
A developer might try to freak a player out by having its camera display what is view on screen at random while they are playing the game. They might have its speaker (I think it has its own set) start making noise separate from the game or images appear on the tablet meant to distract or warn you of some hidden danger. I honestly think a Fatal Frame for Wii U is a most given Nintendo owns a chunk of the franchise now and how it will give players a chance to have their very own gyro sensing ghost fighting camera in their hands via the tablet. The possibilities will pretty much be determined by how much effort a developer puts into milking the system for what it is worth.

Yup, I thought it was Uncharted when I first saw it at E3.
