Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Is The “Perfect Fit For The Survival Horror Genre”

Exactly when did having zombies turn a game into survival horror? Horror existed long before Zombies and so did survival.

Survival horror is a genre built around the idea of surviving a dangerous event with limited resources and capabilities.

"Lost in Blue" is now a survival horror game.

The closest thing to traditional survival horror was RE: Revelations.

But the fact that the tablet can be used while things go on the screen is useful.

A developer might try to freak a player out by having its camera display what is view on screen at random while they are playing the game. They might have its speaker (I think it has its own set) start making noise separate from the game or images appear on the tablet meant to distract or warn you of some hidden danger. I honestly think a Fatal Frame for Wii U is a most given Nintendo owns a chunk of the franchise now and how it will give players a chance to have their very own gyro sensing ghost fighting camera in their hands via the tablet. The possibilities will pretty much be determined by how much effort a developer puts into milking the system for what it is worth.

Love some of those ideas. Yes the game pad has it own set of speakers so using them to create the mood is a great idea for this genre.

I was unware that the Lost in Blue was horror which I specifically implied as being one of the 2 components that make a survival-horror game(compound genre like action-adventure) being that it seemed common sense was not enough to inform some individuals.

Praise be to your reading comprehension.

Damn right. My reading comprehension is the best, because it's fuelled by satire.

And that would make the game "survival" as it is in the original Japanese name for the series(Survival Kids).

Now add constant assault and mortal threat by malicious supernatual evil and you will get the compound genre survival-horror as well.

Zombies are indeed one way it could be done.

Then there are possessed/spirits like in Alan wake. Then there are deranged killers like in Clock Tower. Then there are demons like in Alone in the Dark. Then there are simple monsters like in Silent Hill. Then there are traps and wild life like in Penumbra.

Zombies are the most popular way to to provide danger in survival horror games, and people will always make that correlation, like it or not.
