How about all of us stop with the Nintendo's dead, Sony's dead bullshit and see what really happens when the rest of the Gen 8 consoles hit the markets. Not point bickering here about who's going to fail for the next cycle when only 1 out of the possible 3 big ones are released.
And back to topic, I don't see how the 3DS's dying right now, and whether if the 3DSXL was an act of desperation remains to be seen. From what we know it's still very much alive and pummeling the Vita (sadly) and is still on pretty much on track to reach DS's level of sales even with all of the smartphone and tablet hoo-hah. Of course things can change any moment.
And Wii U's barely a week old. As much as there have been compliments about what it could bring to the gaming world (Miiverse, assymetrical gameplay and the possibilites of the second screen), it also brought about some notoriety (the OMG 12.8 GB/s-slower-than-PS3-and-360 RAM capabilities, and poorly performing ports of existing console games). Then again if it is really going to falter, that doesn't mean that Nintendo can't pull off another 3DS-like "miracle", so to speak. It's still too early to say if the second screen would fail Nintendo.
Back to the big picture. No matter which console manufacturer falls, it does not spell good for the dedicated console industry at all, it only gives nay-sayers another reason to boo your PS3, Xbox 360 or the Wii U you think is on the track to failure.
