Forums - Sony - Problems restoring PS3 from backup please help :)

well, I got the external hard drive formatted to FAT32 and now copying the backup back to the external.
I used this little tutorial:

Reformatted the external on this website:

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

okey dokey, so what do I do then? can I reformat the external without losing everything on the backup? i still have the 160 GB HDD, if I need that

I would do as you said, back up your lap top. What is possible, but I don't know if it would work, is to divide part of your external into fat 32 and then maybe move the data over to there somehow? I don't know if that would erase your data or not though.

well, right now I'm copying the backup from the external hard drive to my laptop. About 20 minutes left, thanks to the power of USB 3.0. Then I will try to reformat the external. But I'm not sure how to reformat it.

But wasn't your PS3 unable to read the backupped data on the external drive? Why would it help to shuffle it around to one more hard drive?

We must look at the objective. Keep his data safe whilst changing his external drive into a new format. He might be able to partition it and keep his data safe and then move it to the partition or he could back it up somewhere else, reformat the drive or partition it, and then recopy it in the correct format. I guess it isn't needed, but I'm not sure if by partitioning the drive, if he will lose data or if you can copy files across a partitioned drive(I assume you can but have never done it).

Yeah I think I understand now.

All the data in his original 160GB HDD is intact, but it's essentially worthless since it's already moved out of his PS3.

So he has to save the back up data on the external HDD and hope it can be salvaged.

homer, why can't he just put the 160GB back into his PS3 and copy it to the external HDD? But this time format the external HDD first.

The ps3 reformats any hard drive you put in your ps3, even if it is already formatted. Basically, it swipes every hard drive before use. It would swipe his hard drive if he did that and he would lose his data on it.

lol wow

So basically you need to make sure your backup was successful before ever removing a HDD out of your PS3?

mysticwolf is in big trouble then.

Yes. I'm surprised it even recognized the external drive in the first place. Mine didn't until I reformatted it or I would have made the same mistake. Sadly, some of my data was corrupted(found out was freaking Gran Turismo 5 install data crap) after I deleted many of my games(not saves). I literally had to redownload everything. I guess I have unlimited internet because I didn't exceed my bandiwdth limits despite downloading like 50 gigs in a week.

He could just buy an external hdd case and move it from his then external 160gb drive to his formatted 1 TB external drive if it came to that so it isn't useless per se. There is always a way as long as you keep it safe somewhere.

So you don't need a PS3 to copy the 160GB to an external? A PC can read that 160GB and copy it to another HDD?

No, I don't think so.

This is what I meant. You can buy one of these and boom, your hard drive is now also external. Then you could copy it. I don't know if just putting it in your pc would work. I would assume that actually wouldn't work because isn't your computer's OS saved in the hdd? I don't know much about this stuff so I'm barely keeping up as is. I would keep it safe with externals.

Did you format it first?
