Could I transfer the backup on the external to my laptop, and then reformat the external, and then put the backup back on to the formatted external?

I think that would b the best course of action. Just remember to keep a back up somewhere so that no matter how you try to remedy the solution, you still have your data.

You can't do that. You have to format your external drive before you back it up. I'm pretty sure I had the same problem.

So... how do i format my PS3 slim so I can back it up again?

I'm gonna have to put the old HDD back in the ps3. I'll do that now

If you do that, you'll lose all its data. The ps3 reformats and erases everything in all hard drives even if it was one previously in it.

okey dokey, so what do I do then? can I reformat the external without losing everything on the backup? i still have the 160 GB HDD, if I need that

I would do as you said, back up your lap top. What is possible, but I don't know if it would work, is to divide part of your external into fat 32 and then maybe move the data over to there somehow? I don't know if that would erase your data or not though.

homer, why can't he just put the 160GB back into his PS3 and copy it to the external HDD? But this time format the external HDD first.

Good timing, I'm about to do this as well. I guess I'll format my external drive never knew that. Does it matter if it's FAT32 or NTSF, I thought I read somewhere the PS3 only reads FAT32? I could be wrong.

well, right now I'm copying the backup from the external hard drive to my laptop. About 20 minutes left, thanks to the power of USB 3.0. Then I will try to reformat the external. But I'm not sure how to reformat it.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

But wasn't your PS3 unable to read the backupped data on the external drive? Why would it help to shuffle it around to one more hard drive?

I don't know, becasue my external drive wasn't formatted for the PS3 to read it properly. If nothing works out, I do have all my save data backed up on PS+

The ps3 reformats any hard drive you put in your ps3, even if it is already formatted. Basically, it swipes every hard drive before use. It would swipe his hard drive if he did that and he would lose his data on it.

Fat 32 I believe is the format. The problem I ran into was my pc could only format 32 gb into fat 32 so one has to use extended ft or some crap like that. You need a special program on a pc but I did it on a mac after I was getting nowhere on the pc.

lol wow

So basically you need to make sure your backup was successful before ever removing a HDD out of your PS3?

mysticwolf is in big trouble then.
